BARRY TAYLOR left this review about The Lord Palmerston (JD Wetherspoon)

Lord Palmerston, was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom in the mid-19th century and I take it they named the pub after him because of his Navy connections with the Isle of Wight. This expensive conversion of the former 'Chicago Rock Cafe' is Wetherspoons' second Lloyds No.1 branded pub on Portsea Island. Offering a higher degree of comfort than most JDW houses. Southsea has a vibrant social scene with numerous bars and eateries so the competition from the low prices offered in this hostelry are somewhat negated in this area of the City. It's a tidy pub with the standard 'curry restaurant' carpet and over-the-top lighting that you expect in a 'Spoons'. Normal array of local real ales at £1.85 and two pumps with "coming soon" notices (why bother?). A labyrinth of a pub awaits you. Me and my friend 'The Cosham connoisseur' left this pub and went next door to 'The Slug & Lettuce' because although they were showing the Six Nations Rugby they had decided not to have the sound on and only subtitles! We thought we'd got it wrong but this was confirmed as true by one of the knowledgeable punters in the other pub and we were glad to have switched our beer futures as they didn't have a 'deaf and dumb telly'.

Revisited as in area on lovely sunny Thursday in February lunchtime, this time tried food & a pint

My first impression from last year is confirmed, a cut above the average JDW, no dirty uncleared tables for a start, and only 2 "coming soon" pump clips. Also no long queue at bar, or drinkers propping it up, in fact all very civilised, which is the least I would expect given the location

Forget what I had to drink, pint of guest at 1.85, which was drinkable and enjoyable, but obviously forgettable, but then I never make notes so no chance of remembering that

Had a baguette, wanted cheese but they had run out, so settled for ham, no complaints, nice & fresh baguette, plenty of ham, comfy clean seats, away from the tele, nothing not to like

As my previous comment, worth dropping in if in area, even if only for a coffee & bite to eat

Staff were clean, well presented, polite & pleasant

Toilets [male & female] were spotless

Very ornate dim, & cavernous interior, given over mainly to dining [lunchtime visit], the customers were a mixed crowd, single ladies & mums drinking coffee, grey pound couples plus a few drinkers

If you like 'spoons you will like this one, should do well given local catchment area & tourists, not worth a journey though but OK if around the Palmerston Road area, like shopping or visiting D Day museum etc

Not tried the beer or food, so 5 stars for being open, pleasant and value
