A lovely looking pub but sadly the 4 handpumps on the bar were all bare. Multi areas to drink in with a pool table to the left as you enter. A fairly basic set of rooms decor wise. It could and should be much better than it is.

A fabulous looking pub from the outside this one, just across the road from Spoons. The interior was mainly set up as a music venue. Nevertheless, they were serving Hobgoblin and Boondoggle.

This is a really nice looking pub at the far end of the market squares, with white and brown tiles on the facade, some nice etched glass in the windows and the look of a real pub about it. The sign is a Mansfield Brewery one, so it's part of the Marstons stable these days, but surprisingly there was only one of their ales on the bar: Wychwood Hobgoblin, with pump clips repeated on two hand pumps. This was in OK condition and not unreasonably priced for Chesterfield, until you consider the Wetherspoons just across the road 60p a pint cheaper.

This is a multi-roomed pub, though the walls and doors that once must have separated the rooms are now pillars and screens. A small area near the front door was set up for a band to play later that evening, and there were some young people with guitars having either an impromptu practice session or actually rehearsing before the gig. Either way, their efforts were hindered by the very loud music coming from the pub's own CD player. Surely there are better ways of getting them to go and play elsewhere?

Each room has slightly different furniture and décor: the room I was in had reproductions of paintings of local railway scenes, from which I discovered that there was a station for the market just opposite the Sun. It's long since demolished, of course, but the painting - probably done from an old photo - shows cattle pens on one of the platforms. In this room, to the right of the entrance, there's a rather smart fireplace with red tiles and black fake marble mantel piece.

Worth a visit for the architecture, but this could be so much better.

Beautiful tiled exterior. No ale or anything else interesting inside (which wasn't very nice) so I headed on. Would make a fantastic acquisition for an aspiring small brewery to showcase their wares...
