Prominent pub on a roundabout heading someway south out of Chesterfield on the A61. This was the highlight of our Easter Sunday 10-pub crawl in Derbyshire. Checking my records, I've been here at some time in the dim and distant past when it was called the Royal Oak.
There are several drinking areas around a central island bar. The walls and ceiling are painted red but it isn't too overpowering. At least two fireplaces contained wood burners. There was a large screen TV above one. 50s/60s music was playing, seemingly the landlady's choice. Clearly a pub favoured by CAMRA, there is a "CAMRA Corner" where there are several framed CAMRA certificates. Discounts are offered on pints with a double discount on a Monday.
Of the 8 handpulls on the bar, 6 had cask ales. Ashover Littlemoor Citra is the regular beer. Guests were Ashover Three Horseshoes, Bang The Elephant I'd Rather Have A Pint Of, Shipstone's Mild, Shiny Hover Boards & Alter Ego Incognito. A 7th handpull had a Pheasantry Best Bitter clip turned with the 8th unclipped. Bag in the box ciders can be found behind the bar. They had Lilley's Rhubarb Cider & Gladiator & Snail's Bank Apple Hog. All beers and ciders are listed on a board which can be found on a pillar near the entrance. Beers available soon are listed to the side of the bar.
Meals are not served in the pub itself but there are regular food trucks in the car park. On Easter Sunday, this was BBQ food. Pork pies were on sale at the bar, along with jars of local honey.
Dogs and children are permitted. There is a quiz night on a Wednesday and there also seemed to be live music on a Saturday. The landlord and landlady were friendly and both seemed to have a good knowledge of their beers. I'd recommend a bus ride out of Chesterfield to try this one.

A large standalone brick built pub that once served the local mining community. It's a very inviting looking pub from our approach on the bus, which practically stops outside. The bar really sparkles with its gleaming handpumps as you enter and on our visit, there was a choice of six ales across their eight handpumps. The line up was Ashover Butts Pale Ale and Rainbow's End, Abbeydale Moonshine, Castle Rock Brickyard, Oakham Citra and Pheasantry Single Hop. Great service from the chatty and welcoming barmaid, running the bar single handed. The pub has a good sized rear beer garden and food vans can be seen on a regular basis in the carpark. We happened to be there on the afternoon of Fri 4th July. Ashover Brew Co were holding a launch party later that evening (the original Ashover Brewery went into liquidation in 2024), so it's nice to see that the Brewery has risen from the ashes again. Well worth a visit here, lovely pub.

The refurbishment here has been nicely done, though the interior of this pub is a little complicated, especially for such a plain, four-square building. The bar has an impressive eight hand pumps (see photo), with half of the beers being from Ashover Brewery. I was just pondering the likelihood of keeping that many beers in top condition in an out-of-the-way place like this, when a previous customer came back into the pub from the beer garden, saying his beer was not right. It was instantly changed and the pump clip turned around, but I couldn't help wondering how much of the barrel would now have to be thrown away. (I picked up a rumour later in the year that all is not well with this brewery, and I hope that this pub venture is not proving to be more of a hindrance than a help.)

Alan Winfield left this review about The Royal Oak Inn
The Royal Oak is a stand alone pub that is situated next to a busy traffic island.
Once inside there was an L shaped room to the front with an island bar, this room was carpeted and had comfy bench seating and chairs, there was a TV to the right showing music videos, there was a games room to the rear which had a pool table in it.
There were two real ales on the bar,i had a drink of John Smiths cask which was a decent drink but slightly too warm, the other beer was Bombardier.
The pub was empty on my Saturday afternoon vist but there were a few people in the beer Garden.
