Delboy 20 left this review about The Wanderer's Return

This is now The Wanderer's Return. A Sports bar.

Called in this week - no ale on so we settled for a Stella.

This pub is housed in a fantastic looking Gorgian styled building which is in cream, with peach coloured sash windows and dormers in its mansard roof. The lower frontage has a rusticated look - all of which is offset by the pictures of Che Guevara on the sign. The interior is a general L-shaped room and is in grey and red with mainly a wood floor. It is populated by tables and chairs (all seen better days) on one side and a sofa area on the other, by a picture of Che Guevara again (see photo) and a load of wine bottles that look somewhat out of place - one would have expected cigars in a Cuban bar. Fairy lights and 70s paper puffball lanterns are other features, along with a nice wood dresser tucked sadly away in the far corner. The TV had a music channel on, at a decent level. The service was fine and i was completely alone at my visit. Beer; no real ale, just the general keg drinks with a decent enough Banks's MILD. It is OK for a nip into during the day, but probably unbearable at night!

Modern open plan night time trendy bar, as are most in the City Centre.

Its not a bad layout, the flag & 'oak' floor are actually nice features and the wooden bar is quite ornate. The seating is limited, some sofas and chairs but most of the space is given over to night time vertical drinking.

Strange pub to review for me this one, as I spent a lot, and I mean a lot, of time drinking in the former traditional dinking parlour here before it was done up. Yes, it has lost some of that old town centre pub charm, but its also gained a new lease of life, and the toilets of death, where you used to have to drop sharply into the cellar are thankfully long gone. I don't mind evolution, even when its a pub close to my heart as this, and the opened up space is ok. Its a shame the quality of the beer is appalling.

Ok.

This is an old Georgian looking building which was previously known as the Exchange Vaults, it is owned by Marston’s Pub Company and has the feel of a city wine bar. The interior is an L shaped room with a large L shaped bar counter, the left of the room has several tables with a projector screen on the back wall, on the right of the entrance are half a dozen large brown leather sofas with low coffee tables, there is a plain fire place in the right hand wall with a very large arty portrait of Che Guevara on the wall above, on the right of this is a massive shelving unit stretching floor to ceiling which is full of around 200 odd wine bottles, in the back right corner behind a sofa, is an interesting feature, it is an ornate wooden mantle piece and impressive mirror which is the only remaining evidence of a large fire place. The décor is modern with paper lanterns hanging from the walls.

No ales, but as I walked in the young bar maid said “we have had a problem with our delivery, so we’ve only got Banks’s Mild on.” This was unexpectedly ok despite being keg.

Definitely not my kind of place so I wont be going back, more of a night time venue for the pre-clubbers I think so I shall leave it to them.
