Real Ale Ray left this review about The Derby Tup

Sorry to hear Quinno had a bad experience, as on our visit it was quite the opposite. We walked into the main bar and found about 10 people around a big table all checking out the ales. There where three locals who were friendly and chatty. The pub also had a small snug on the left as you entered, which was very comfortable looking and a small room to the rear, which was a bit dated. The pub was clean and toilets spotless. The manager explained that he didn't have any graffiti in the loos and that was a reflection on his customer base.
Ten real ales on handpump, I went for the Ashover Hummy, Longman Brewery Sussex Best, Exmoor Hound Dog.

Quinno _ left this review about The Derby Tup

After a long hike and a disappointing stop at the Chesterfield Arms I made it to this place, with its boast of having been in the Good Beer Guide “for the last 27 years” making me thirsty. Well, what a disappointment this one was. I entered to the din of drilling going on somewhere in the building and two other customers, who were clearly local and on the salt-of-the-earth side but seemingly harmless. The atmosphere was similar to the moon. The woman behind the bar reminded me faintly of Olive from On the Buses. As the opening hours displayed outside said it shut at four, I checked (being 3:40) that I’d be alright for a couple, only to be told that the sign was wrong and they are open all day Sunday, but “it’s indelible so we can’t change it”. WTF? This lack of gumption set alarm bells ringing so I took a punt on two of the ales, one from Oldershaw that I’d never come across and what should have been a safe bet in Kelham Island Pale Rider. Both, unfortunately, were poor. The Oldershaw was vinegary and the Kelham Island tasted old and musty. Given the general atmosphere I decided not to make a fuss as I didn’t think it worthwhile to my blood pressure.

Aside from my griping about the ale, the interior should warrant a few words. It's a pretty basic affair, with a long narrow seating area off to the right of the bar (which oddly sits at the far end of the pub) with whitewashed walls, pew seating, black painted concrete floor, a dart board (which had chairs and a table in front of it) and what looked like a real fire. Old pump clips were neatly mounted and framed by brewer in small collections. One bit of interesting architecture is the relatively ornate glasswork at the bar. In between blasts of drilling, aural stimulation was provided by an unconvincing local radio station. Lots of closed pubs nearby makes you wonder whether this might be next, given that I only saw five other customers during my stay, most of whom weren‘t drinking the ale. Seeing as the new Chesterfield FC ground is a stones throw away (almost) I guess this place is relying on it for survival and maybe is a different pub entirely on match day? I certainly suspect the ale suffers when the club haven't played for a while (they were playing away the day before my Sunday visit) as it doesn't seem to get puilled through and it is not cared for.

I wouldn’t bother with this one again.

The beer is great but when I've been in it has lacked atmosphere. Hopefully that will change with Chesterfield FC's new ground so close by.
