A roadside inn on a busy junction by a fast bend that makes the car park rather dicey. There are actually two car parks, one at the front and one at the back. Also at the back are chalet B&B rooms and a small garden next to a private lake. The pub cat, fish rising in the lake and a variety of dogs, for whom treats can be bought from the the bar, make something of a menagerie, yet between them make less fuss than the continually screaming child who appears to live there. Inside, a single bar has been formed by knocking through the 2 front rooms, and there is a function room for hire. The bar is comfortable, though the furniture is battered and worn. Entertainment is provided by 2 TV screens and some gaming machines. Food looked basic, and it wasn't as pricey as some other pubs in the area. Two handpumps on the bar, but the one clipped Palmer's IPA went off as we entered, so we had Sharp's Atlantic from the other. The beer was OK. Just. A halfway decent local and a useful cheap B&B, thought there is still a hint of the chavishness BobOs mentions, below.

On my last visit - on the good side the Old Hooky (the only ale) was 10/10, as were the staff. The ambience was good, with a nice seating area with comfortable leather chairs - spoiled only by the seriously chav clientele complete with their own acrid smell of smoke. We had been led to believe that the food portions here were very large and, judging by the very high cost they should have been. My curry, listed as medium hot, was seriously bland and the portion was seriously small. We eat out two or three times every week and this is the only time I've gone home and had a pasty and half a packet of biscuits because I was still so hungry! All in all - 3/10 if only for the Old Hooky and the staff. Will we be back? - certainly not. Well below average.

Roadside tavern with chalet lodge accomodation at the rear. Now the only pub in the village it actually sits right on the A37 which bypasses Chilthorne Domer. The only beer on was the commonly available Sharps Doom Bar which always fails to inspire. It was drinkable and in good condition which reflects well on the cellarmanship here. Interior remains unaltered since the last review two years ago.
