We came here once around 1972 and I can recall very little about this small pub. What I do remember was a 2p coin glued to the red lino floor but what really stood out was the blue and yellow parrot, which was obviously the talking point in every sense, as it 'conversed' with customers.
I’ll leave the interesting history in the main to What?ub, but there’s a modernised interior extension in part, with pale exposed wood beams and smooth white painted plaster with horse brasses to the fireplace, hop bines to the bar area at the mid-level of a split level, multi-roomed pub with quarry tiles to the bar area, carpeted to the low ceilinged rear dining area (see photo), with very atmospheric ancient dark wood beams – mercifully unpainted – rustic whitewashed plaster, exposed wattle and leaded lights with bullseye glass, décor in the form of eclectic prints of former regulars, then earthenware growlers and pewterware pots, illuminated by discrete shaded sconces. Judging by the accents – locals aside – the dining incomers were all from the West Midlands, briefly and somewhat incongruously to Ennio Morricone’s theme from The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.
A decent ale lineup amounted to Ludlow Blonde then three from Hobsons: Bitter, Twisted Spire and Green Hop, eminently quaffable and at a very reasonable £1.65 a half, served by a friendly barmaid; a few more pints would have succumbed to gravity if I’d not been driving.
On my Saturday evening visit, I found this place managing to combine lively locals’ boozer with dining; this is a very decent pub and although hard to find, it’s worth the effort and better than the Maidenhead over the road, but £16.00 for two sausages, some mash and gravy is better left to the Boot's well heeled.

Now in community ownership, this is a nice pub in a tranquil setting at the centre of the Herefordshire village of Orleton, which is not far from the Shropshire border.
There is a large bar area as you enter, with a dining area at the right-hand side and a snug at a slightly lower level to the rear left-hand side. Hobson's Best Bitter & Twisted Spire are the regular beers with their Dirty Gertie on as a guest, along with Ludlow Gold as a 4th ale.
Featuring in the 2023 Good Beer Guide, this was the better of Orleton's 2 pubs, although my Dirty Gertie didn't quite seem in tip top condition.

A nice little local community boozer, doing decent food and great beer, just what every village needs. 5 of us had a mixed bag of food on a Sunday lunch, from roast beef, through chicken to duck and pigeon. Everything tasted great and was washed down with a couple of pints of XXX and Hobsons Best. off the beaten track, but well worth a visit. decent car parking at the rear and a beer garden for the summer.
