There was a time when a station pub had the feel of a last-chance saloon. Not any more! The Sheffield Tap is smart, clean & comfortable with a good selection of excellent beer, much from Thornbridge a few miles down the tracks, but also featuring renowned breweries from around the land. Given the location, you could either include it at the start or end of your Sheffield pub-crawl: I'd recommend the former, so that you can really appreciate the place.

When I called in on Thursday they had put the Thornbridge on the 4 pumps at one end and had 6 guests on. We enjoyed Magic Rock Curious and Thornbridge Browne. There were 3 or 4 of the guests from Phoenix brewery.

The above was August 2011, and we are back in Sherffield and as usual find this a good one to start and or finish any crawl of the city's pubs. Nearly always find new Thornbridge beers on, and this time round have had Art Brew and a selection from Magic Rock too.

I have been fortunate enough to get in a couple of visits since my first review despite living 200-odd miles away. The beer has been impressive and there seems to be an almost regular clientèle in here now, incredible for a station bar really. Last week me and my friend somehow drunkenly got involved with an Eggheads-style weekly quiz taking place on an adjoining table and we gave them a run for their money despite being a fair few sheets to the wind. Great atmosphere. Perhaps one small niggle is that the staff can be a bit hit-and-miss as one or two seem to actually be working here to be seen, which is fine so long as you also actually do a proper shift. Not quite a 10, but damned close.

September 2010
Located on platform 1 of the station (though it can also be accessed from outside the station), this is a former first class waiting lounge that fell into disrepair and was closed for years until a recent sympathetic restoration and subsequent re-opening as a beer emporium. The main bar room is the highlight which retains many of its original features including wonderfully ornate tiling, mosaic floor and traditional fireplaces (though these are unlit for some reason). The fantastic mahogany bar back is a feast for the eyes though whether that is reclaimed from elsewhere I don’t know. The room to the rear (street access) is, by contrast, fairly bland and as noted elsewhere could do with a few themed pictures to cheer it up. There have been eight ales on the go during my visits, the majority of pumps dedicated to Thornbridge with a few well-chosen guest beers thrown in. There’s also a fantastic array of high-end keg beers (Bernard feature prominently as well as Sierra Nevada) and hundreds of bottled beers from around the world. No Stella or Smoothflow here! Prices are at the higher end of the spectrum, especially for the higher abv beers - you are paying a premium for your surroundings. Quality of the beer has always been very good. One small criticism would be a lack of info on the train departure times, a small discreet monitor wouldn’t go amiss. This is a real destination pub and you’d be foolish to miss it.

This pub is situated on the station platform but this entrance was closed and a doorman was outside the street entrance.
Once inside there are three rooms and i had a drink in the main bar which was quite busy at 10.20 in the morning.
There were 11 real ales on with 4 Thornbridge beers at the far end of the bar,i had a drink of Peak Ales Bakewell best and this was a really nice drink.
The beers that i noted were Peak Ales DPA and Thorbridge Jaipur,Lord Marples and Pivini.
I quite enjoyed my drink in here while waiting for a train to Dronfield.

Note: This pub opens at 10.00 on Saturday

Inside this place has a feeling of a newly refurbished bar which was a fair size with 3 separate rooms. Entrances are directly off platform 1 or from the road outside the station. At one end there was a bank of 6 Thornbridge ales and at the other 4 from the Rooster Brewery: Yankee; Leghorn, Eldorado and Spearmint Mild - which was OK really.

Back in Sheffield and another visit to this super bar on the station. Really busy and a great atmosphere for a station bar. Plenty of ales on offer again and we enjoyed Fernandes Chinook and Dark Star Over the Moon this visit. Finished our crawl here but it is THE place to start of finish your Valley of Beer crawl and hope it gets noticed by CAMRA to go in the next edition of the Good Beer Guide. Deserves to be there.

On arrival in Sheffield for their recent festival managed to spend a bit of time here and as well as their own superb range of Thornbridge Ales, they had a couple of Heskett Newmarket ales on. Great condition. Viewed the bottle range and feel an afternoon or two could be spent here sampling the 200+ continental beers on offer.

This place is just beer pornography. Loads of Thornbridge, plus lots of real ales from a guest brewery as well. The superb interior is worth a visit to take in on it's own but the Tap's real party piece is it's huge selection of beers both in bottle and on tap from around the world. Most of which have their own proper branded glasses as well.

The more I visit the Sheffield tap, the more I like the place.

Superb tiled Victorian interior in this relatively new pub to the Sheffield beer scene. Full range of Bernard Czech lagers on including the dark and the non filtered lager. Also (this might be the one that Thomas below may have had as it is a fltter beer to the normal ones) American micros on draught and a huge selection of American bottled beers plus other bottles from around the world. There are about 10 hand pumps dispensing mainly Thornbridge ales but also some from hawkeshead at time of our visit. Will be happy to wait here longer when changing trains at Sheffield station,

I have visited this pub on numerous occasions. I usually settle for the Thornbridge ales. These ales are always distinctive and enjoyable. However on my last visit I tried a pint of czech lager (Bernard) it was dispensed completely flat and tasted oxidised. I complaned to the barman who was abrupt and rude, the manager eventually came and informed me it was ment to taste that way! I work in a brewery so was unconviced by his excuses. He refused me a refund even tho I only consumed a mouthfull. Needless to say I wont be returning to this pub after such shocking customer service.
