Back again to this trendy bar, though not by my personal choice. Three pumps with two ales and a cider. Wye Valley HPA and Lakesider(?), the latter of which tasted distinctly odd. Sat in the upstairs room, which is dark and dingy (others may say ‘atmospheric’). Re-reading my previous review I see I found an odd taste in the Wye Valley last time, so it’s fair to say I don’t get on with this place. I suspect this visit might be my last.

April 2014
Housed in a workaday 60’s building, the interior has been done out in a trendy bar style - in fact perhaps a little reminiscent of the Firefly at the other end of town as this place was lit in a similar fashion. An upstairs room done in a comfortable retro lounge style was surprisingly empty. Seemed to have a cocktail emphasis though there was a welcome sighting of three pumps, two of which were operational with Wye Valley and Dark Star APA on. I had a half of the APA and there was something not quite right about it, lacking the fresh clean crispness I know it usually has. Still, I’d be tempted to look in again at some point. Never did spot any Smiths references inside... Rated 6

Quinno kindly guided the remaining PG stragglers to this pub, Dave, Tammy, Mrs A and myself. I quite liked this pub as it was quirky and there was also a Dark Star American Pale on handpump. The pub was trendy, but not OTT, the upstairs lounge was very comfortable looking, with settees and standing lamps in various patterns and colours. Would defo make a revisit.

Called in yesterday and the décor doesn't seem much different from the description below. Lots of cocktail shakers round the side of the bar with menus so they must be popular here. Music was a little loud for us. 3 handpulls, and we chose an old favourite, Thornbridge Jaipur.

This is a terraced bar. It is in an amalgam of 60s style brick, purple panel and glass, with the lower frontage in black brick and glass - it is a sort of Goth's office block conversion.

The interior continues the theme. There is a single room on the lower floor that has walls in purple, purple and gold wallpaper and a greenish colour, with a purple ceiling and wood floor. There are big ornate mirrors on the walls, along with strange cartoony art and a homage to 'The Smiths', who sang Hand in Glove back in the 80s. The serving bar is a large (for the size of the place) irregular shape and faces you on entry. The seating is somewhat eclectic, with pouffes, chairs, booth areas and chesterfield styled. The upper floor has a smaller room, in similar decor, with 'library book' wallpaper but a purple carpet - with mirrors and pictures. There was no TV that i saw and the music was mixed and at a decent level. The service was good, with a couple of regulars in attendance.

Beer; usual tap stuff with a few Continental lagers. Wye Valley HPA was the only handpull, but others had been on. The HPA was decent.

I didn't know what to expect when i visited, but left more than happy. I wouldn't spend all night here, but definitely worth a swifty.

Hadn't noticed this lounge bar style property on previous visits and as they promised cask ales I thought I'd give it a go. A couple of hand pumps plus continental lagers and two ciders on draught. Clean and tidy and interesting decor, although it was done up for halloween on my visit. Not really a pub experience but OK for a quiet pint in the afternoon. Reminded me a little of the Half & Half in Croydon.

Modern wine bar with a rather strange decor, parts of it look almost Asian. Leather chairs and stools and a couple of alcoves downstairs. Upstairs is a lounge style area with chintzy chairs etc. It’s rather like Odd or Odder in Manchester. It also has two handpumps serving St Austell Tribute and a changing guest which was the fantastic Wye Valley Dorothy Goodbody Stout when we visited. It was a very good pint as well. I thought that overall this place was fine but the other half loved it.
