More sports bar than pub, this old high street building has had its groun floor rooms knocked into a single large square room with almost no character and few redeeming features. Outside was no better – a small smelly terrace at the front where litter, rather than customers, congregated. There are some comfy seats along one side, but otherwise it’s just a room with high tables and chairs, and a bar counter at its edge. There are multiple TV screens showing live sports, and the airwaves are polluted with the most awful depressing contemporary popular music. The young female staff are just about functional, certainly not polite or entertaining in any way, and there was a skein of feral children flapping about and getting in the way. Ales on were Pride and Doombar, neither in great condition, though there were 3 ciders from Lilley’s which was a plus. One handpump was redundant. The keg range was Fosters, Cruzcampo, Strongbow, Moretti, Amstel, John Smith’s, Stella, Carlsberg, Neck Oil and Guinness. Eight-pint towers were on sale along with 2-pint jugs and cheap cocktails. Despite the promise of its location and building this is nothing more than a down-market seaside bar with no pub atmosphere, just a place to come and get drunk. No golden eggs coming out of this goose, in fact just the opposite.
