This former grand hotel is now more middle-range, lacking in grandeur but not in customers. It’s what you would expect from a London hotel, a lot of gloss on a crumbling infrastructure. The rooms are pleasant enough, the staff are polite and helpful, even the food is tolerable. The two bars, however, are a disappointment. The wine selection is sub-standard, and there is no real ale in either. Service is painfully slow, and the general ambiance in both is that of a Ukrainian massage parlour. Probably good for a final glass of crème de menthe if you don’t want to use your mini-bar, but not somewhere I’d want to be stranded.

The Strand Palace used to be fairly grand, and the bar towards the back had a very traditional London pub atmosphere. Corporate greed has seen to that and it's now a standard issue mid-range tourist hotel that could be anywhere in the world. Neither of the two bars has any character at all: they are woefully understaffed given the number of people who want to use them and because of the the service is slow and sometimes grumpy. There's no draught beer and given that there are several decent pubs within 50 yards its only real function for pubgoers is to provide a nightcap if you are staying upstairs.
