This was my debut visit to a Waxy O'Connor's, Mrs Ale having visited their flagship pub in Leicester SQ London. I found the layout most intriguing with it's multi levels and numerous snugs, something like off Lord of the Rings. Beer wise Guinness, Caffrey's etc, but well worth a look around.

The is one of four Waxy O’Connor’s, with two more in London and one in Manchester. It has been some years since I visited the London branch with its sprawling interior and plastic tree that climbs through the many floors of the pub. This Glasgow pub is much the same with its many floors, seating areas and bars. Live music is advertised for Thursdays thru to Sundays and live sport is advertised. The bars are stocked with a standard keg range and pub food is available from opening at 10:00 (breakfast) until 20:45. With a choice of bars it is possible to book them for private events.
This is a decent themed pub on the Glasgow tourist trail. I would have no problem returning.

The main entrance is on West George Street and as the pub is so long there is also an entrance on the opposite side at Dundas Lane which is opposite the side exit / entrance to Queen Street Station. The name of the pub is named after Waxy O’Connor who was born in Smithfield, Dublin City, in the year 1788. He gained his name by way of his profession as a candle maker. Primarily, he is remembered for his great appetite and capacity for hard liquor. It seems he was not alone amongst men of his craft - their fondness for and ability to consume copious quantities of beer and whiskey are legendary. The excuse for such excesses is that as candle makers had to work in such extreme heat it sapped a man of both energy and fluids. As Waxy O’Connor was heard to comment, “Such heat does parch a man - a parched man is a barren man - and beer is the only cure ...ah, us lads could put away gallons in a day!” Water, it seems, was an unknown elixir. This pub in Glasgow has 3 floors, 6 bars and 9 different areas. There is a 01:00am licence for private functions. There is food available which is served from midday to 8.45pm daily and there is a breakfast menu available from 10am Saturday and 11am Sunday plus there is a Sunday Roast available.
