Hotel pub but not obviously so, despite the fact you have to go in through reception. Five real ales, one of the pumps was off. Nothing of any strength, I'm afraid.

This is a very smart country hotel, almost off-puttingly smart in fact. To get to the bar you have to pass the hotel reception, but once inside the sight of the row of hand pumps on the bar reassures you that you've come to the right place.

The local Hartington Brewery is represented by both Whim IPA and Bitter, there was also Blue Monkey Ape Ale (Notts) and Lymestone Einstein (Staffs), so the contrast in beer menus with the other pub in the village was stark. The list was completed by Marstons Pedigree, presumably as a concession to the less adventurous drinker. This was another non-drinking pub for me, as I was driving, so I had a Fentimans Dandelion & Burdock, but I am certain to come back some time, maybe on the 442 bus, so that I can try a few of the ales.

As well as the bench/tables out front, there is some more outdoor seating near the car park at the back, but the description of this as a beer garden is stretching things a little. Inside there are various low tables with deep leather seats and pouffes, and I imagine that taking your drink into the (incredibly smart) dining room would be frowned upon, so maybe this is the place to indulge in a little upright drinking or bar leaning?

This pub has an hotel feel to it but once you get to the room at the back it is a lot better this room is quite big and fairly comfortable.
There were Four real ales on the bar i had a drink of Slaters Bitter which was very nice the other beers were Whim Hartington bitter/IPA and a beer from Salamander brewery.
Not a bad pub to have a few drinks in.

The Charles Cotton has the feel of a hotel-come-pub (I should have guessed from the name). It was a baking hot day when I visited and it was nice to sit outside with the other punters and watch the cyclists and dog-walkers come and go in what is a very picturesque village.

GBG 2010 entry. The 5 handpulls offered Titanic Steerage and Iron Curtain, Hartington IPA and Bitter and Wild Walker Old Big ‘Ead. I would visit again but I’d consider an overnight stay because it’s a lovely location.

Having visited Hartington repeatedly for the best part of a very long time I could not remember ever having a good pint in this place - not one. That is until today 07/06/09. Once a place to be avoided the transformation under the new management has been miraculous. The local real ales (Leatherbritches & Whim) were supurb as too was the food. I'm reliably informed the accommodation has improved too. It really does make a nice change on having to report such a massive improvement. Would I visit again - yes, most certainly. Small car park at rear of the hotel & street parking available in the village square. Pretty village, good dairy shop near to pub. Up from one star for the location & old times sake to three stars.
