In 1860 there were 11 pubs in the North Street/North Cross Street triangle; The Fox is the only remaining, the others all having been demolished as part of a tacky urban renewal project. I believe it is now listed, a good thing as it is an architectural oasis in a cultural desert of brick and blacktop. It is a 19th Century tile-fronted anomaly with a large bow window to the front and etched and stained glass windows to add character. Inside is not as interesting - a late Victorian fireplace (possibly repro) a mix of carpets and floor tiles, a couple of annoying gaming machines and a raised wooden dias at one end, presumably for "entertainment". The locals were a bit rough and ready, but far more welcoming than in some of the other nearby pubs, and the barmaid was very pleasant and jolly. Despite there being no real ale on, the Fox has retained much of its old-time back street boozer character and is worth a visit.

I would love to say this was my local, but despite the fact that I only live a few yards away from the Fox, I would have to see some major changes to this pub before I become a regular visitor there.

It's such a shame...because it is potentially a fine historic pub and could be a focus for the community here at this end of town

Bit hidden away off High Street

Centuries old pub according to a notice inside, and it looks like the decor is as well. Nicotine stained ceiling from hundreds of years of clay pipes I guess

Despite having hand pumps on bar there is no longer any draught beer, only 2 types of keg bitter, I had Bass

Two bars separated by an archway, the interior pictures are of the Saloon

Has potential to be a pleasant & historic pub, but has become somewhat run down and could do with a spruce up

Car parking is problematic, there is one adjacent but not sure if pay or not

One star only but could do better given it's potential
