Will Larter left this review about The Palfrey

Formerly the New Inn, the Palfrey is a complicated building, or series of buildings, between Hopping Hill and the main road at the bottom. It can be accessed by steps from the bus stops on either side of the A6, and I'm not sure that wheelchair users will fare any better from the other direction. The main building is at right angles to both roads, and on a slightly lower level is another building which looks like a chapel or a meeting room of some sort, that has been joined on. Once inside, all tables seemed to have been set for dining, though there is a bar to the left on entering with a couple of hand pumps and some keg taps. The solitary beer was Wylam Fleek, which was a long way from home but in pretty good nick. I was told to "sit anywhere", but after a quick look around and a photo of the "chapel" I decided to sit outside, where there is a bit of a sun trap - or there was in August. My visit was before 1pm on a Saturday, and it looked like I was the first customer of the day. They're clearly not aimed at solitary beer tourists, but I was made to feel welcome and the beer was ok and not excessively expensive, so what's not to like?
