Previously know as The Lord Palmerston and The Unicorn, The Marquis of Lorne was named after the 19th Century statesman in around 1872. It's a good, basic local boozer, little by way of frills, but has the benefit of 4 real ales and gravity fed barrels of cider behind the bar. There was a genuine welcome from staff and a friendly reception from the locals. At one end of the bar was a tv showing sports. Previously frequented by soldiers from the nearby barracks, the only military connection today appears to be various model tanks and framed prints dotted around. They do some food theme nights, most notably a curry on Wednesdays. I had a pint of Worlds Biggest Liar which was on very good form. One of the better pubs in the area, and worth a visit. I would also include in a town crawl.

The Marquis of Lorne is an L shaped boozer with a bar that supports a very limited draught selection including Courage Dark Mild. There are now four hand pumps that were drawing Thwaites Crafty Devil, Everards Pitch Black, Old Speckled Hen and the 6.5% Old Crafty Hen… Ouch!
There is a jukebox that was turned off during my mid week lunchtime visit in favour of a retro sci-fi film shown by Movies for Men. The pub itself is quite basic with a pool table at the rear and it is the sort of pub I would expect to show Sky Sports, but I didn’t see it advertised so maybe not.

For a basic local’s boozer this place is ok, but I wouldn’t make a special trip to revisit.
