Alex Conway left this review about Spanky Van Dyke's

A student orientated pub/bar bang opposite Nottingham Trent University. As you might have guessed it has a strong student following although anyone is welcome. Once inside there is one very large open plan room with limited lighting that give in a bit of a gloomy feel although nearer the main entrance there is some natural light that gets through. There is a very bohemian feel about the place with quirky furniture and decorations as well as an upstairs seating area. At night time it becomes very busy especially on student club nights and weekends and music is played loud. There are many keg fronts on the bar dispensing usual suspects but also a decent range of harder to find/premium/craft beers as well but obviously at ridiculous prices. There are also four ale taps that on my visit were dispensing Doombar, Hop Back Summer Lightning, Old rosy cider with one not in use. The Summer Lightning was ok and in ample condition but reduced of a lot of the flavour i know this brew to have when in tip top form which was disappointing and expensive for Nottingham at £3.50.

This will not be everyone's cup of tea but at times when a last drink is desired and the pubs are shut this late opening bar fits the bill with passable ale if you can stand the young clientele and loud music.

Alan Winfield left this review about Spanky Van Dyke's

When i first went in this pub it was called the Fair and Firkin and it has had other names over the years,i think it first opened around the late 90s.
The latest name is the pretty stupid Spanky Van Dyke's,once inside there is one large room and the bar is to the left, the room has got a lot of settee type seating for students to lounge about in and these seemed to be all over the place making the pub look untidy, there was what looked like a large fish tank at the far end of the room but this was empty and had fairy lights in it.
There was also some stairs which might have lead to an upstairs room but i did'nt look.
There were four handpumps on the bar two had real ciders on and the other two had Pedigree and Doom bar on but these two were turned round so it was a Guinness for me which was ok.
There was some pretty crap music playing on the sound system.
I would'nt bother with this place again.
