A good village freehouse slightly spoiled by having a small caravan park behind it. There is a car park, garden with seating and a boules/petanque pitch which appears popular with locals and visitors alike. The pub’s core dates from the 17th Century, and some original architectural features can be seen if you look closely. The bar’s décor is an odd mix of painted plaster friezes on the ceiling and counter and exposed timber, all contrasting with a rather horrible red carpet and stone fireplace. The plaster friezes are of particular note, supposedly relating to local pagan tradition. Of the more recent extensions, the most notable is a large conservatory at the back which serves as a restaurant and function room. There is WiFi and a dartboard. The staff were very welcoming, while the customers were a fairly mixed bunch. They host regular live music events and an annual beer festival. Freshly cooked food was available at a reasonable price, mostly traditional pub grub, but tasty and good value. There were 5 ales on draft, and the pint of Butcombes Rare Breed I had was in perfect condition. I shall most certainly be back here, and it’s worth deviating from the furrow to find.
