Now re-opened under Heineken's Star Pubs initiative, this is now light and bright inside, with cream-coloured walls and inbetween beams painted mushroom colour. My visit was timed just right, as a dispute between two patrons was coming to an end with one party walking out, before turning back in the entrance and pointing, and a couple of choice locals, using choicer language with a TV screen showing racing to no-one in particular, means that perhaps not a lot has really changed here - strange, when you consider the success of the nearby Dodo Micropub. No real ale here - another pint of Guinness as I'd had as a fall-back in some of the non-ale pubs nearby. Some unobtrusive background muzak, and the barmaid, despite harassed (she'd had similar customer problems the night before I found out) was pleasant.

The exterior of this pub has now been painted emerald green. The interior walls are painted a combination of crimson and lemon yellow, with the ceilings painted salmon pink between the brown painted beams. It’s bare-boarded throughout, with furnishings a mixture of banquettes and normal tables and chairs. There are three inter-connected rooms, with the room labelled the Public Bar containing a pool table. I also spotted a dartboard. There was some pop music blaring out, and a muted TV showing a sports channel. They don’t serve real ale – the only bitter was John Smith’s. This pub reminded me of some Spanish bars that I frequented in my youth; quite uninspiring and characterless. But the dog and other punters in there seemed friendly enough though. I doubt whether I’ll pay a return visit.
