A busy GBG18-listed village pub dating from the Georgian period, no frills, but a very warm welcome. There is a well-drained car park and a small garden with a very pleasant setting. There is a long L-shaped bar at the front with a few dining tables, but mostly space for socialising. A room to one side is laid exclusively for diners, the food being mainly standard pub grub at an average price – it’s certainly not a gastro. There is a smaller room behind the main bar with its own carvery counter. An open brick fireplace at the apex provides ample heating for the open-plan space. The only electronic distraction is the TV which was switched off when we last visited. Handpumps dispensed Reel Ale and Gun Dog from Teignworthy, Otter, Butcombe’s Original and Burrow Hill Cider, plus one unclipped. Dog treats were available for purchase form the bar. Well worth a visit, and it’s on the 2018 Somerset Ale Trail.

Genuine country free house, in the middle of nowhere in South Somerset. If you know where it is you will enjoy this pub which does appear to be local farmers association HQ. Beers were Butcombe Bitter and 2 from Cottage (Reservoir Dogs and A C Cobra - 2 new beers from a brewery that produces 2 new beers each and every month). The Butcombe was good and the Cottage was, well Cottage. Really surprising to find a pub where I had a 3 deep queue at the bar! Great atmosphere. Shame about the uninspiring guest ales.
UPDATE November 2012. Still good atmosphere beer and food, Butcombe and 2 from Teignworthy were the guest ales this time.

Original 'Spit and Sawdust' Country Pub. Worth the visit just to meet the characters who frequent it. Huge local farming support, surreal sense of humour. True membership only awarded after Shirley has asked you to leave! 4 Stars is never enough!
