A Victorian backstreet local corner pub, very welcoming, well described by MM, below. The single knock-through L-shaped bar has repro fireplaces, etched glass windows and small TV screens which are good enough to watch sport without being intrusive. Two ales on, Ubu and This England, both in very good condition. I'd be happy to come back, and it would make a good addition to a crawl.

A prominent corner pub with a brewer's Tudor upper level and the trademark corner turret seen often in Pompey pubs designed by local Architect A E Cogswell. Inside, the central bar splits what remains effectively two rooms albeit now divided by a double door sized clear opening. The front room is boarded and has regular seating with banquettes, chairs and small stools, the rear area has a pool table and dartboard and less in the way of seating. TVs show live sport, décor has lots of Portsmouth FC stuff, framed shirts, a flag with autographs, team photos, a mirror and so on, Fratton Park is not much more than 5 minutes away. Additionally there is an interesting case of old pub games, a few local prints plus on the bar gantry, a range of sepia photos of dockyard scenes.
The pub has a real community feel, a friendly welcome at the bar, there are quiz nights, a meat raffle at weekend, the pub was as clean as a whistle too.
Three handpumps, two in the front and one in the rear public, Butcombe Bitter in both rooms plus Bowman Swift One in the front room (£3.30). Food served, I didn't see a main menu, but table menus listed toasted sandwiches from £3.50-£4 with chunky chips at £1.50. Sunday roasts are £6.95 plus a chalkboard listed various breakfast options.
There are some very good pubs in this part of town, another new one for me to discover on a flying visit. Perhaps not the broad beer range as some others but very good nevertheless.

This pub has now been taken over and is family run. They have certainly turned it around.
Can't comment on the beer as I'm a lager drinker.
Serves good, reasonably priced food, with a barbecue Sunday lunchtime (weather permitting).
The garden has been done very well and has comfortable seating.
