There are three Wetherspoons pubs in close proximity to one another in the centre of Rotherham, but this place is the only one operating under the Lloyds No 1 brand. Arriving at around midday on a Saturday, the place was considerably calmer and quieter than I might have found if I'd visited late on a Saturday evening, to the point that I found it a very comfortable and peaceful spot to relax over a pint. The place is surprisingly smart with décor that looks pretty classy by 'Spoons standards and helps create an almost cosy feel in some parts of the pub. There is a long single room interior, set on a hill which means that the left hand side of the room is on a higher level. The front carpeted area has limited seating and the usual 'spoons history boards which explain the story of Ebenezer Elliott - the eponymous 'Corn Law Rhymer'. Smart black and white wallpaper and plain mirrors help give this area a clean, contemporary look not usually associated with Wetherspoons. Moving further into the room, a decent raised seating area emerges to the left, with standard tables and chairs under large side windows. To the right on the lower level there are a few high tables and stools, some tub chairs and a couple of grand U-shaped banquette booths, all underneath a nice decorative ceiling. The servery eventually appears further on along the right hand side, opposite a side entrance on the upper level. To the rear, a cosy seating area with comfortable looking seating options opens out, painted in warm shades. Unusually for such a venue, I didn't spot any TV screens (or at least not any that were turned on) and the clientele seemed almost exclusively to be old folk enjoying their full English breakfasts.
For all the positives I found with the pub's presentation, the ale range let it down badly. Ten hand pumps could only muster up three 'Spoons regulars and two guest ales, with a remarkable five 'Coming Soon' clips giving the initial impression that the range was better than it really was. I opted for the Sixpoint Importer, which I'm pleased to say was in excellent condition.
I thought this was a pretty good stab by Wetherspoons at creating a pleasant modern bar that will appeal to a wide range of customers. I was a bit disappointed with the ale range, but appreciate that this could have been a one off and I'd happily call in here again.

The Corn Law Rhymer is situated right in the middle of town in a decent location.
Once inside the pub seemed dark and dreary and seemed to lack the atmosphere that i found in the Rhinoceros,the room is oblong shaped with some large high backed settes to the front,the bar is to the rear right,the seating in this area is mainly normal tables and chairs,there is also a raised area running down the left side split into two seperate areas.
The choice of beers on the bar was a bit dissapointing,i had a drink of Acorn 4 Monkeys,this was a decent drink,the other beers i noted were Brakspear Special,GK Abbot x2,Ruddles best x2 and Hobgoblin x2
There was a decent amount in mainly having the cheap breakfasts,there was also a queing system in use here.
This Spoons seemed to lack any atmosphere,one of the poorer Spoons i have been in.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Corn Law Rhymer (Lloyds No.1)
Rectangular bar with a raised seating area along one side. Dark inside except near a couple of larger windows. For a Lloyds No. 1, it had a better than expected choice of beers from nine of ten handpumps, including Abita Redemption Pale Ale (remarkably priced at just £1.49).

The pub is in a prime location and is named after Ebenezer Elliott,who was a poet,non conformist and hated injustice,and brought attention to the corn laws and got them repealed.For a Lloyds No 1,found the pub a little disappointing,being rather dimly lit,lacking atmosphere and had a poor choice of cask on tap,although the Wharfdale Brewery's Wispa was ok.Out of the three Wetherspoons i visited on the day,the best by far was The Bluecoat,which had an excellent range of real ales.

Very much a Lloyds no1 Bar within the 'Spoons empire,I am sure this place appeals to the younger drinkers at the weekend.A small selection of ales,two from local micros in a long open plan interior at the bottom of a 60's office block.Identikit interior ,you could be anywhere in the UK but the friendly bar staff infused some Yorkshire good cheer.

A standard Wetherspoon's in terms of building, interior and offer. Only 3 real ales available: Abbot, Ossett's Lions Roar and Leed's Midnight Bell. The Lions Roar was quaffable but didn't tempt us into a second pint. Bar staff were very helpful and did inform us that the Bluecoat, also Wetherspoon's, is the real ale specialist in town along with clear directions for getting there.
