This is a prominent pub at a crossroads on the A39 south of Bristol and must get a fair amount of passing trade. It's even situated at an angle so you can't help but get a great view of it while you're waiting at the traffic lights! It seems smaller inside than you might think – there's one L-shaped room with a L-shaped bar. Interior is pleasant enough with a real fire (great on a freezing evening) a few trinkets around the place and various country scene pictures on the walls. It doesn't have quite the cosiness of some country pubs, the ceilings and walls are a fairly light colour, there's no beams or other attractive features.
On the evening we visited there seemed to be some sort of OAP dining club in attendance – we were the only people in there under about 60! That was a Sunday though, I'm sure it's livelier on other nights. The menu looked good with a proper selection of “pub grub” – curry, fish & chips, scampi, etc., plus a small specials board.
The landlady was very friendly and knew most of the other punters by name – in fact many of them were getting their drinks poured before they'd even ordered.
I used to come to this pub fairly regularly about 15-20 years ago and was surprised to seem the same landlord – he must be doing something right to still be there after all that time.
Beers on tap were Butcombe and Otter, plus Thatcher's Dry cider.
Not sure why it's only scored a 5 - the one other review here seems reasonably positive.
