The Horse and Groom is a large imposing building next to the old Shipstons Brewery and still proudly bears the name across its frontage. Formerly the Shipstons social club but is now a pub in an area that has for years has lost many of its pubs. Once inside the pub has several separate rooms including a lovely snug to the left with a giant open fire that is perfect on a cold winters evening. There is a large bar area with a few separate room off with another drinking area up a level, there is a lot of space and could hold a lot of people when at capacity as I’m sure it once did when it was a social club. The pub specialises in real ale and there was a very good selection on my last visit the beer available were Shipstons bitter (£3.10, a Shipstons beer is always available) Castle Rock Harvest Pale (£3.10) Thwaites Lancaster Bomber(£3.30) Batemans Rosie Nosey (£3.40) Elgoods Black Dog mild (£3), and a beer called Nelson from a brewery I failed to note (£3.30), my Firecracker was beautifully kept as are all the beers here usually. This is a proper real ale lovers boozer that is full of character and as been relatively unaltered keeping its heritage and charm. The only real downsides to this pub are A, the location is out of the city and not on any bus route (served by tram only) and located in a undesirable area near the dark and dingy backstreets of new Basford. Secondly is how relatively quiet it has been on my last two visits, there has only been around ten people each time in such a large building which means there can be a bit of a muted atmosphere, but with seven hand pulls in top condition someone must be drinking all that ale so maybe I have been unlucky and came at a quiet time. I will absolutely be calling again and consider this a very underrated pub on Nottingham’s real ale scene.

Well worth a visit and only a short walk from the Wilkinson Street tram stop. Eight ales on handpump on our visit, the Kelham Island Best, Leeds Brewery Yorkshire Gold and Blue Monkey Dark Blue were all top class. Also had five ciders available, will defo call again.
