Ten years after my previous review I was in Troutbeck again; I've been here between times but did not feel the need to update my review until now. On this occasion there were four beers on the bar, all either blonde or golden. The Robinsons Dizzy Blonde was doubly represented, with one of them badged as Chilled Dizzy (as my note made at the time said, Good Grief!). The others were Patterd'ale, which I can find no trace of on the Robinsons website, so maybe they've stopped making it, or it is something else rebadged for sale in pubs where the pun on the depicted Patterdale terrier might be understood, if not appreciated. The final beer was Cumbria Way, but I swerved that as I have found it insipid when tried elsewhere. The doggy beer, despite the dreadful pun, was in good condition, a 4.2% golden ale (NBSS 3.5) at £4.30 a pint, which is about £1 cheaper than similar beers at the nearby Mortal Man. I would have enjoyed my visit here more - I think the pub has improved, or is better run than when I was here in 2012 - but for the awful behaviour of some people with a dog nearby, which is not the fault of the pub, but really, some people just shouldn't have dogs.

We called in for a pint and a fish finger sandwich during a 9 mile hike round the area during the Easter weekend. The pub is really food orientated, almost everyone in the place, (which was packed) were eating and most of them were drinking lager or wine. this should have rang alarm bells when I ordered a pint of Dizzy Blonde, which was no better than dish water. It went straight back and was replaced by a pint of Double Hop, which was slightly cloudy but drinkable. I decided on a second pint and opted for Cumbria Way, thinking that not all the beers could be cloudy, but it was in about the same state as the Double Hop. By this time, the barmaid was trying in vain to pull a good pint from a new barrel of Dizzy Blonde, but to no avail. There was no sign of line flushing between barrels and I suspect that the new beer was being contaminated by the old. We left, not wanting to tempt fate with the Old Tom or the Trooper. To be fare, the food was very good, as was my wife's wine, but I really wouldn't go back for the beer, toilets were pretty grim too with lots of "fluid" swilling about on the floor and quite a nasty smell.

This is a Robinsons pub, a genuinely old building which makes a big deal of its "famous four poster bar". The bar itself is a fine piece of work, with carvings reminiscent of church misericords, and there's a stone flagged floor and a couple of fireplaces. One of these had a roaring log fire when I visited recently, and it was pleasant sitting here on the cushion-strewn settles.

On the bar was a selection of Robinsons beers, including Old Tom and the seasonal Tom and Berry, plus a couple of the old Hartleys beers that used to be brewed down the road in Ulverston. The beer is in good condition here, but a little on the pricey side. This is not a typical Lake District pub, being slightly on the posh side, though that's not to say walkers with boots are unwelcome. For those staying the night, there are apparently four-poster beds too.

Upmarket roadside small hotel, posh and comfortable, but priced accordingly. Features a 'four poster bar' canopy. Selection of local ales seemed in fair form; appeared aimed mainly at food trade.
