Located in the University of Liverpool, this is a pub that has a mixture of locals and students. It regularly makes the Good Beer Guide and has a good selection of real ales and ciders, often winning the CAMRA Liverpool Cider Pub of the Year award.

Not being open at the weekends and being a fair walk uphill from the city centre, it's not a pub I get to often enough. In fact, it's had a bit of a makeover since my last visit, which was pre-Covid. It does indeed look a bit fresher inside. The outside still has a fairly unappealing look, with flats above.

The 5 cask ales on our Tuesday afternoon visit were Peeless Skyline & Ice-Breaker, Byatt's Regal Blonde, Big Bog Baltic Porter & Electrice Bear Werrrd! The cider range seems to have diminished since I was last here, but they still had Weston's Rosie's Pig Tropical, Hairy Ferret Traditional & Cock Eyed Bush Pig. There were also a couple of craft beers from Neptune, namely Pacu & Hell's Canyon.

This is still one of my favourite pubs in Liverpool. It's a shame there is not enough business for it to open at weekends, when I am generally in the city.

Weekday only opening times make this one a bit awkward to tick. It’s well worth a look if you can though, a hideous building housing a quality real ale pub. Basic barebones interior, but a staggering array of pump clips on the walls. Four ales and two ciders on when I called in, Plum Porter very reasonably priced at £3,20 and it was a tranquil atmosphere despite visiting on a graduation day. A rare example of a proper university pub, second best only to the sadly missed Herdwick bar at Lancaster.

As long as you can tolerate students this is a decent pub. 5 ever changing handpumps plus a couple more for cider. The place is just one room and up until a couple of years ago there was a pool table but this has been removed. Can sometimes be busy at the end of lectures but is usually quite quiet. Its not usually open at weekends. A welcome place for an after work drink at least.

This 2011 Good Beer Guide pub was quiet when we called, about half a dozen at 9pm on a Saturday night which seemed strange after all the busy pubs we had just visited. We stood at the bar chatting to the barman who was interested in our crawl list as he was the 20th pub of the day. We enjoyed the Blackwater Bauhaus while chatting to him.

Situated at the edge of the Liverpool University campus this insipid modern building has the atmosphere of a students union bar although it is not just frequented by students. Comprising a long corridor like room with a conservatory at one end housing a pool table, games machines and some screens for the sports channels. Decorated in red and cream, seating is low booths of bench seats down the window side of the room and there is an alcove area opposite. The bar is in one corner by the conservatory, as is a food servery. Five handpulls, although when I visited the Abbott had just gone and the remaining choice was Tetley Cask or Spitting Feathers. Tasting notes for the cask beers are helpfully posted on a notice board next to the bar. The beer was well kept and in good condition but neither brewery is on my must have list. The bar is a regular in the Good Beer Guide and appears there again this year (2010).

Called in here after a short visit to the adjacent modern RC Cathedral (pretty impressive it is too). There was a demo going on outside the cathedral by Iranian anti government supporter which added to the fun. It's a fairly nondescript looking pub built into what is effectively a concrete block. It's actually within the university grounds, but all are welcome. There are plenty of seats outside (plastic glasses only outside). Inside there is a pool table facing you as you enter and seating to the left, there's also a quiz machine. There are TV screens all over the place, so you won't miss them no matter where you stand or sit. Four handpumps on the bar Tetley's bitter, Abbot Ale plus 2 changing guests, Cains Sundowner and Hidden Fantasy when we called. I had a pint of the Cains which was pretty good. Friendly welcome from the landlord when we arrived. It was pretty quiet as it was about 1 p.m. on a Saturday lunchtime, but it's OK in here.
