Blue Scrumpy left this review about The Romans

Situated opposite a school in a residential area of Southwick, this is a nice-looking pub from the outside. Since the previous review, real ale and cider has been discontinued. 4 handpulls are present on the bar, but look a bit forlorn. So, I suspect it will be quite easy for CAMRA to overlook it!

There are a couple of good size rooms. Although on my weekday afternoon visit, there were just 2 other male customers and the barmaid. The keg selection was Carling, Guinness, Fosters, Amstel, Moretti & Orchard Thieves.

Recently moved to area and what a gem...a traddiional community local full of the sort of cross section you would expect to find, characters one and all.
Very friendly staff Harvey's best and Bombardier permanent and perfectly kept plus guests at the weekend Bass,Doombar, etc plus winter porters and summer ales.
Live music , great pub for Brighton fans , great Sunday lunches and hoping to expand food offer..massive beer garden and BBQ ,easy parking .
The and lord who's been there 9 years is a great guy and really switched on to his community..it's not surprising this pub has won awards the only suprise is they can't get into the good beer guide as its as good a real ale pub as I've been to and at 55 I've been around. I hope this pub goes from strength to strength and Camra don't overlook it....Cheers Romans you've done a lot ;-)

The Romans is a large pub located a short walk from both Southwick and Fishersgate railway stations. There are a few picnic tables outside the front of the pub on some tarmac, but there is a much more comfortable beer garden at the rear. Inside the pub there is an over eighteens area to the right of the entrance where bar billiards and a quiz machine can be played. The main bar area is to the left of the entrance and the large public bar is at the rear of the pub where there is a dartboard and pool table. Plasma screens are located throughout for showing Sky Sports and there was a decent crowd in attendance when I visit early on a recent Saturday afternoon when Man U(re) were playing their last game of the season. There are function rooms for hire and there is live music and karaoke at the weekends. Standard draught products are available from the bar and only Hobgoblin was available from hand pump as the Harveys Best and Doom Bar were both off. I’m not a big fan of Hobgoblin, but it was well served. Advertisements outside the pub state that food is served all day, but this is not the case as the kitchen is only open during lunch and dinner periods. I did see some food being delivered and it looked like normal pub grub and it was reasonably priced.

This is not a pub that I would go out of my way to visit, but if I lived locally I’m sure that I would be seen in here quite often.
