Blue Scrumpy left this review about The Hole in the Wall

I was hoping for a good start to yesterday's trip around Cambridgeshire pubs with this village pub in Little Wilbraham. Initial impressions were good. It enjoys a nice rural location and the door was open prior to the published midday opening time.

A one-way system was in place and I strolled through the "entrance" door into the bar, expecting a range of 4 real ales, according to the CAMRA website. The handpulls were there, but they no longer stock real ales. There wasn't even a fizzy cider to sway me away from a soft drink. Keg options were Corona, Camden Pale, Peroni, San Miguel, Bud Light & Old Speckled Hen.

The bar is now a slightly bizarre area with some rather gaudy furniture that wouldn't look out of place in a brothel. There were no traditional features at all, whilst music was being pumped out at quite an unacceptable volume, considering I was the only customer. I did decide to venture through the second room to the toilets, thinking there may be more drink options there. Sadly, all tables were made out for dining with a coffee machine being the only further source of refreshment.

It looks like this place has turned primarily into a dining establishment, with the gaudy bar area being a pre-dining drinks area. However from my experience, most people dining on a weekday lunchtime are either retired folk or mothers that lunch. I can't imagine either subset of the population enjoying the music range here. I managed to depart before any customers arrived. So, I'll never know.

As with the previous day, it could only go upwards from here.

Popped in a couple of weeks back for some food and liquid refreshment, on the strength of its Good Beer Guide entry. Located in a lovely quintessential English village, we sat outside in the sunshine-trap garden, bar a quick five minutes in the interior to order food. The interior is wood beamed, open-fire country pub ambience, with a separate dining area away from the drinkers. The beer (Woodfordes Nelsons Revenge) was fair and they also sold the Woodforde Headcracker in bottles. Food was ordered from the posh-sounding menu, my mate and I got a pair of excellent dishes clearly home-cooked on site - worth the expenditure.

If you're looking for a good example of a country pub which specialises in food, you could do a lot worse than here. I enjoyed it.
