Dating from the start of the 19th century, the current structure was rebuilt in 1899, an ‘E’ added to ‘Old’ since the last review.
This was a former Taylor Walker outlet (now Greene King), their brass hanging lights still in situ. Otherwise, it’s a simple affair with a fake ‘old’ bar back, modern boarded floor and grey and blue colour scheme; furniture is traditional, normal height and tall. What is of note are the prominent PowerPoint presentations advertising all the cabaret action, for this is a gay pub. There’s Drag Race Thursdays and acts from the likes of Sissy Lee, Moira Less and the peripatetic Wilma Ballsdrop. Customers were a general mix, along with some obviously gay and lesbian drinkers, the overall atmosphere being good, but having passed it the previous Thursday when the neighbouring Greenwich Theatre had disgorged its customers into its clutches, it can be a bit of a bear pit.
The ale front amounted to just GK IPA, so it was a half of Neck Oil at £3.45, served by a very friendly barman.
This place is probably ok for those exiting the adjacent theatre and is obviously at the epicentre of Greenwich’s gay scene, but otherwise there’s better – marginally – to be had nearby.

This is a Taylor Walker pub, but with not much of an ale choice. There were three handpumps on the counter, but two were unclipped and the third was dispensing Hop Stuff Single (£2.20 a half - typical Greenwich pricing). It was actually rather good, and it was a nice enough day to enjoy a very hoppy beer, but a choice would be nice. There are single sheet pub grub style menus, as you would expect from a Taylor Walker pub. The Big Ben burger is £11.49, but includes chips, cheese, bacon, onion rings and an egg. In fact every price on the menu ended in 9p, so I guess they must stock up with 1p coins! I don't think anyone will be fooled by the 99p ploy these days, as I think we can all work out that £10.99 is really eleven quid.

But never mind that. The pub has the usual TW furnishings - there's a bare-boarded area on the right with mainly tall tables/tall stools but with a couple of normal tables and chairs, and on the left is a carpeted area with more normal tables and chairs. The faux antique look is present here. I don't think that there's anything of heritage interest remaining now, but the moder bar back is at least designed to look traditional. Having said all that, it's actually quite a comfortable and clean pub.

As the rugby World Cup was on there's Union Flag bunting strung acress the room, plus Guinness and "Ask About Cask" bunting as well. I'm not sure what one is supposed to ask about cask; I asked about cask and was told they only had the one on. The rugby was popular though, with a group of Spanish tourists thoroughly engrossed in it. This pub's not perfect, but is a decent place to stop off for a pint and is probably worth wandering to from the tourist centre of Greenwich to find a slightly less crowded pub.

A classic Victorian corner pub with an attractive appearance enhanced by the squint ended gable proclaiming the pub name and its heritage. L-shaped boarded interior, high tables in the windows but regular issue elsewhere, red ceiling and it felt very traditional but the general décor was obliterated by heavy Halloween junk, despite this I noticed a couple of etched mirrors and a few of the usual old photos of the area.
For reasons unknown a film was showing on mute while music played, although the film had subtitles, a new one to me, a fireplace down one end contained Christmas related promotions, yawn.
it is however a proper pub, with proper drinkers and all that goes with it, there are London Drinkers on a shelf, a limited beer range had London Pride, Marston's New World plus Rosie's Pig cider. Food served, reasonable with bangers and mash at £8.29 and Ham, egg and chips £8.69. A pleasant and busy back street local, just off the town centre and well worthy of a look in.

Visit was afternoon,Autumn 2012

One large L shaped bar, pub conveniently placed for the Cutty Sark & Greenwich college.

Has real ales, plus usual keg stuff, serves food, staff & locals were friendly

Only possible downside is toilets are down stairs, so may not be suitable for all users

Worth walking over from the nearby Cafe Rouge
Unlikely to ever be in area again, but if I were I would used this pub
