Lloyds no 1 bar converted from a former nightclub , split into two levels each with there own bar , the bottom bar is the quieter of the two , the main bar is the upper one , there is a small outside drinking area (handily placed near the rear entrance of the Armoury). There are normally 8 ales on , the usual Abbot Ale/Ruddles and a selection of local beers Woods/Slaters etc , the beer is well kept . It does get very busy in here at weekends though its not as understaffed as the other spoons in town so service is not to bad .
Its worth nipping in early on but the towns more authentic pubs soon start calling

Roger Button left this review about Montgomery's Tower (Lloyds No 1)

The original Montgomery’s Tower was part of the town’s medieval defences and many would claim that this large Wetherspoons Lloyds No 1 Bar is similarly adept at keeping people away from the town centre.

Originally Bar Med before ‘Spoons took it over and gave it a bit of a facelift, the outside looks like a cross between a car showroom and athe otsdie of a football ground. The capacious interior is divided into 2 distinct areas, each with its own bar. Much of the busy main bar will appeal to those who like their sofas and contemporary furnishings whilst the smaller “disco” end was a bit more of a standard ‘Spoons pubbyness and was ironically a bit quieter (this was early evening so no pumping music or clubber invasions at this point). On the plus side, it doesn’t really feel like an authentic ‘Spoons apart from the prices and the usual good selection of ales including some interesting local choices (that I failed to note).

The place is certainly not to evreyone’s tastes but fulfils all the usual ‘Spoons requirements although weekend evening are probably best avoided if you want some peace and quiet.
