This is a top beer destination pub, with three cask ales and nine craft beers. I went for Big Hug Brewing's Awakening, a 4.7% black IPA. This was an astonishing £4.40/pint on the blackboard but my half was an un-arithmetical £2.25. After paying considerably more in many of Brighton's pubs I was pleased to discover Hove pricing. This was a most unusual black IPA, with a hint of pepper about it. Interestingly, the same beer was available in it's craft keg form, this time priced at £6.05; ok, I wasn't that interested.

This pub, which previous photos show in off-white, has succumbed to the fashion for black or dark grey paint - inside as well as out. I'm prepared to forgive on this occasion and would be happy to return.

Approaching the Brunswick, I was struck by the sizeable beer garden. Entering the pub, I found a cool, laid-back, big room. The bar offered craft cask & keg, plus Peroni, Kozel, Urquell & Orchard Pig cider. My half of cask Downlands cask should have been returned but, to be fair, they did turn the clip after I drew the poor quality to the attention of the bar staff. I opted for craft keg for my next drink. Both cask & keg featured a strong local emphasis.

I found The Brunswick to be a pleasant place to hang out for an hour or so, but they need to watch the beer quality to make it a must-visit.

Large bar, restaurant and music venue. A very dark interior with a lot of the wood painted black and a terrace area outside. 4 real ales.

There is a large paved beer garden full of seating to the left of the Brunswick, which is a big building itself. Some of this seating is sheltered and outside the front entrance behind a knee high wall are a couple of café tables which looked like they were more for the use of smokers than anyone else. The right hand side of the pub is a separate room called ‘The Venue’ where live events (mostly music) are held just about every evening of the week. This was closed off during my early Tuesday evening visit, but a crowd was gathering for an event that started later in the evening. The left hand side of the pub is a raised seating area where some people were getting stuck into the pub grub. I don’t blame them as the food looked good and throughout the whole of March during ‘March Madness’ all main dishes are £5, which seems like excellent value. There is more seating in the central bar area where a mixture of standard and premium draught products are available. One of the three hand pumps was unused, but Ringwood’s Fortyniner and Sharp’s Doom Bar were being drawn from the other two. This is more of a music pub than a sports pub so there are no televisions and some background music that wasn’t too loud was playing. The other customers all seemed harmless enough and the barmaid was polite.
There is an upstairs room that is advertised as available for private hire.

This is a decent enough pub that I would pop into for a quick pint if passing, but being a bit of a philistine the draw of the live music doesn’t interest me so I wouldn’t make a special trip to revisit.

Built in the 1930's, The Brunswick is a striking building with curved bays, turret roofs and brass crittall style windows. Much of the original panelling (the same as used in the Orient Express) has been rescued and restored, particularly in The Venue. Atmosphere and mood change as you move from the beautifully constructed sunny garden through the airy garden room to the bar (a fusion of the best of modern bar and traditional pub). Despite the high-tech sound and stage equipment, the Venue with its wood panelling, period lighting and fireplace retains a wonderfully cozy feel.
Upstairs we have beautifully decorated rooms for meetings and private parties.
Food is freshly prepared on the premises from locally sourced produce.
