This is your quintessential proper pub. Dark wood, low beamed ceiling, banquette seating and two rooms. Very traditional feeling and in an authentic way, not something that is modern but made to look faux traditional. There is definitely a place for this kind of pub in British society. There is a fireplace and a TV, which was not on.

At the time of my visit on Friday afternoon I spotted five(?) hand pulls offering a range of cask ales including one by the local Kirkstall brewery. Service was middle of the road, neither overly friendly nor abrupt. My half of Golden Pippin set me back £2.15 and was in decent nick.

Signs advertise Wi-Fi and a quiz night, as well as indicating you are welcome to bring your own food (I therefore assume that no food is served on the premises).

Definitely worth investigating, this one.

A nice, old, low ceilinged, well timbered pub, five pumps of varied beers, mostly local. Two rooms, the back one looks more dining oriented.

There's sign on this pub that says built 1630. I don't know if it's been a pub since then, but it certainly looks the part. Wooden beams, low ceilings, horse barasses etc make for a traditional "Olde Worlde" looking pub. You walk in to a small room where there's a couple of stools and access to the bar. Further on is a larger room with comfortable settles around the walls. There's another room at the rear with more of the same and a TV which was showing muted horse racing. There's a patio out the back with more tables and chairs and a wooden extension in a separate shed like building is the games room, with a pool table & darts etc. Unusual, but clever idea if you don't want to change the character of the main pub rooms. Four handpumps on the bar JS Cask, T Taylors & Tetleys plus a weekly changing guest which when we visited was Wharfebank Slingers Gold. I had a pint of this and it was very well kept. We only stopped for one as we were heading for the train back to Leeds. Next time I think we'll call in one the way into Horsfoth as it's a very good pub.
