A basic roadside pub with a carpark and garden. The garden is mostly lawned, but it’s a fairly depressing place with outside seating used mainly by smokers and not particularly inviting to families. The interior is much as described by Blue Scrumpy, below, though the layout may have been amended during a recent period of closure. There is a small bar at the front, though again this was only accessible from the rear. There are two smaller bars at the back, one mainly for eating and the other a drinking bar. The latter has an inglenook, while there is an open fireplace in the other. There is a nix of stone and timber flooring. The young barmaid was friendly and pleasant, though not very efficient or skilled. The locals were stand-offish, making it clear they weren’t up for friendly chat or banter. Two ales on, Tribute and Otter Amber, both in fair condition. There are better pubs for all purposes not far away.

Nice looking thatched pub that seems to profit from its position on the main A35 road.

The front door was locked, meaning I had to use the rear exit from the car park. Also at the rear is a patio area and a small garden. Being such a mild day for mid-November, people were actually dining alfresco on the patio.

Inside there are two cosy rooms, both primarily used for dining. I sat on the only table I could find not laid out for food. My best guess is that it was only because somebody had just vacated it and I'd got in before they could put cutlery and condiments back on!

Service was pretty slow and poor. The young barmaid was fairly condescending towards customers and was quite happy to criticise them behind their backs.

The solitary real ale is Otter Bitter. As such, I decided to go for a soft drink and it set me back £4.50 for a bottle of something fizzy! I nearly keeled over. At least I wasn't paying £27 for the 2-course Christmas meals that were being promoted on each table.

The gents toilets were also in complete darkness. It seemed like somebody (probably the condescending barmaid) had forgotten to prepare the pub properly for opening.

Certainly a pub that knows how to exploit its location, but not one I'd stop at in passing again.
