Will Larter left this review about The Great Gatsby

My first visit hear since meeting Alan here for a brief crawl nearly four years ago (see below). There were eight keg fonts and the same two hand pumps on the bar still, though thankfully they were not offering either Easy Rider or anything from Thornbridge. With a choice of a house beer from Abbeydale called The Beat Goes On 4.1% or a smoked porter from Ilkley, I went for the former. This was probably a mistake as, to judge by the abv and the blandness, this was probably just Deception rebadged. Ah well, we live and learn.

I quite liked the lively cafe-bar atmosphere at the time of my visit, with a good soundtrack and a mixed clientele of student types, male and slightly predominantly female, plus a handful of blokes my age. The walls and pillars are painted a deep sea green and the tiled bar counter has the pub's name picked out in black letters on white tiles, which must come in handy at times.

The Great Gatsby looks quite pub like from the outside.
Once inside there was a small single oblong shaped room, the bar was to the front left, the seating was chunky wood tables and chairs and oddly a high backed leather bench seat to the rear, which looked out of place in this small room.
There was one real ale on the bar, this was Saltair Cascade Pale Ale,this was a nice drink.
The pub was fairly busy on my Saturday afternoon visit with mainly student types.
I was happy enough drinking in this pub.

It's hard to know what to make of this strange place. It's not quite a cafe, not quite a pub. The bar leans more towards the cafe end of the spectrum, despite its two hand pumps, but the furnishings are more towards the pub end, though the scruffy leather sofa with foam padding leaking from its arms and the pink chaise longue with ripped fabric would have long since been thrown out of most of the pubs I know. There's an old cast iron fireplace that seems to have been ripped from a demolished Georgian bedroom and plonked randomly against a chimney-less wall. Then there are the modern high tables set against an equally high bench seat, apparently straight out of a modern sports bar refurbishment.

The two ales on the bar were Kelham Island Easy Rider, which I have vowed to drink no more, and Thornbridge Sequoia, which has the typical strange Thornbridge taste that everyone but me seems to enjoy - a really astringent in-your-face bitterness that is offset by a strange, cloying, fizzy sweetness reminiscent of a sherbet fountain.

The music was a bit on the loud side when I entered for today's mid-afternoon visit, especially the booming bass, but it was more tolerable when I moved away from the bar and took a seat. An interesting and eclectic offering, both the music and the surroundings, and I wouldn't mind visiting again, but the beer choice and the price - at £3.20 a pint, well above what I'm used to paying in Sheffield - would put me off.

ROB Camra left this review about Olive Bar and Restaurant

Small modern bar with an upstairs restaurant. Lots of comfortable seating although everywhere seems a bit cramped as there are too many seats for the available space really. No real ale of course just several lager fonts. The other half thought that the red wine was OK but not as good as some of the other places visited. Fairly loud “background” music which probably gets even louder later on. Lots of girlies in, it's that sort of place. Not for me really, but the other half quite liked it.
