not sure what has happened to this pub, is it being deliberately run into the ground? Very spartan decor inside, soulless atmosphere. A sign outside says ‘no food’. More significantly - no real ale anymore, which makes the old pump clips above the bar a bit depressing. Surely not much longer for this world unless Thwaites have some plan to sort it out.

I visited in October 2017 and it doesn't sound like the pub has changed much between then and Will Larter's visit a couple of months later. There was a sign outside boasting local ales available, but I didn't really consider the Knowle Spring by Tim Taylor or Black Sheep Best Bitter to be particularly local. One pump was off so I gave them the benefit of the doubt! In fairness the Knowle Spring was better than I expected and rather enjoyable.

It's obviously an older building which has been decorated to a more modern style. There had been a bit of a wait at the bar and only one person serving, but I seem to recall I was acknowledged by the young barman while waiting, which is much better than being ignored and wondering if you are invisible. Poor chap looked a bit rushed off his feet. There was a big family group in with hot drinks but otherwise it was quiet. I seem to recall there was a fruit machine in the bar and a separate room or area at the back with more café style tables and chairs - the kind of area you feel you shouldn't wander into if you're just drinking.

The signage of this pub still proclaims it to be a Thwaites tied house, but it is now under new management and offers local ales. On enquiry within, these turned out to be Tirril Gold (local) and Black Sheep Bitter (not local). My half of Black Sheep had overstayed its welcome somewhat, but not really worth complaining about. The interior of this pub is modern sports bar, but the passage to the toilets has original stone flags, and I got the impression there's a nice old pub lurking just beneath the surface here.

A Thwaites pub with a modern interior that seems to be becoming their style: white walls with grey paint. There was a hand pump facing as I entered, but this was serving a cider. Around the corner another part of the bar had two more pumps with Wainwright and the seasonal special Good Elf. Not being particularly partial either to puns or to cinnamon in my beer, I plumped for the beer named after Blackburn's most famous son, but it proved to be unavailable. Perhaps I'll try again next time I'm in town. Watch this space.
