A plaque beside the front door declares a connection with James Herriot, though I'm not sure how resonant that would be with most people nowadays. It's a traditional country hotel with the public bar something of an afterthought. There are four hand pumps (see photos), but judging by the condition of the half of Theakstons Best Bitter that I had, I would suggest that they have one or two beers too many on offer for the business they're doing at this time of year. Not so bad as to be returnable, it was nevertheless not a pleasant drink. On the strength of this visit, I wouldn't expect to call in again.

First stop of day 4 of the Inn Way. Large, multi roomed hotel/pub. Beer was OK. No-one else was in there at lunch - so hard to gauge.

Essentially, a public bar in an attractive stone built hotel and restaurant. There is a large main room, with a cosy area to the right of the bar and an inviting looking snug to the left. The main room is light and airy, but possibly a little sterile with its unbroken white colour scheme. However, there are dark wood fixtures, upholstered wall benches and traditional tables and chairs. Plus, sporting trophies on the shelves and photo prints of local views for sale. A dart board is housed next to the bay window.
Up to four cask beers are normally available. On this occasion they were Black Sheep Bitter, John Smiths and Pennine ‘Hair of the Dog’. The Theakston bitter was ‘off’. Quality of the Pennine was only adequate and I did wonder if it was the first one of the day to be pulled off. However, service from the young bar team was friendly and enthusiastic.
Fairly quiet on our mid-afternoon, mid-week visit, but I would imagine it’s much busier on an evening when tourists staying in the area come out to dine. Having walked to the pub over the fields from Aysgarth, I was more than happy just to have one and move on. Possibly worth popping in, when in the area, but not really justifying a destination visit.
