The Swan Hotel is a Joule’s Brewery pub on the A519 a few minutes north of Newport. To the left of the pub is a car park that is faced by the entrance that leads to the main bar area. Either side of the entrance are grand fireplaces with burners and short adjacent banquettes. More seating is found on the bare boards and impressive wood panelling runs around the walls. A short bar counter on the rear wall supports six hand pumps that were drawing Joule’s Slumbering Monk, Pale Ale and Pure Blonde, all doubled up. Premium keg was also available alongside Carling. To the right of the bar area is a parquet floored seating area with another fireplace. To the left of the bar is a raised parquet seating area and to the front is a tiled conservatory. Steps at the rear lead down to small flagstone seating area and a tile floored corridor to the right leads behind the aforementioned bar to another seating area. In here are two more fireplaces and a small section of back bar allows service. A door leads to the bottom of the stairs up to the hotel rooms above, and a further door leads back into the parquet floored seating area to the right of the bar. This is an impressive building with friendly service, well worth a look if passing.

Will Larter left this review about Swan Hotel

A fine old building which has been given the treatment by Joules Brewery, including some outstanding wood panelling bought for £42,000 from a larger house near Lowestoft and installed here by someone who must really have known what they were doing, as it looks like it's been here for 100 years or more. Not many more, though, as the wood dates back to only 1910! Add to this enough oil paintings to fill a gallery, mostly Napoleonic war naval battles, and I think you'll understand why it took me 25 minutes to drink half a pint of Joules Pale. Other options were all Joules beers: Blonde and Slumbering Monk. The whole experience was like a visit to a stately home, museum, or art gallery (see photos), and beer takes a back seat. The rather loud background music felt especially incongruent in a place where you're expecting a curator to say "sssh!" any minute. If you're tempted to visit, please note that the statement on the Joules website, "just 4 minutes from Newport town centre" applies only to car drivers, or motorcyclists I suppose. It certainly took me half an hour. Oh, and look out for the step down from the entrance to the main room - there's a warning posted there, but I still stumbled. (It was only the second pub of the day.)
