Called in on a Tuesday lunchtime and the pub is still in exactly the same state as the previous reviewers state, including the supports with the yellow and black tape, and basically was in a bit of a mess. There was a few local characters spread around the pub and found the cask beer spot on.

The last time I was in here was around 8 years ago and it looked as though it was being refurbished. That hasn't changed and although there has been some progress there are now yellow and black taped acros dotted around.
Nonetheless, there was a warm welcome from behind the bar and I'm sure that when there are a few in the atmosphere's good. We visited on a Thursday evening during an England world cup footy match which wasn't being shown here so things were quiet.
Beer: TT Landlord, Bradfield Farmers Blonde, Magic Rock Ringmaster, Pictish Brewers Gold, Salopian Golden Thread, Hook Hooky Gold, Saltaire Blonde, Pheonix Black Shadow and Abbeydale Black Mass. Tasters were freely offered and everything we tried from this extensive selection was in good shape.
It's worth visiting for the beer selection alone and I'm sure that the refurb will be completed at some point but it may be a while.

The pub sign makes the regal connection to Jimi Hendrix, this ale house has just won the local CAMRA 2014 pub of the year, which given the white hot competition in town must in itself be noteworthy. At present the interior is undergoing a refurb, some sections were boarded off ,other were a bit of a mess. However I await the final result with interest, there is at present a false ceiling which if removed may expose some grandeur, and the mosaic floor is still a real feature along with some stained glass and a wood burner.Music events must utilise the small stage, nothing going on during my trip.
On my visit the real ale line up from the 10 handpumps included TT Landlord and Golden Best,Bradfields Golden and Blonde,Magic Rock Ringmaster,Phoenix Black Shadow,Pictish Brewers Gold,Hooky Gold,Abbeydale Black Mass and an excellent Salopian Golden Thread. There were also 2 real ciders.
Despite the building works ,I much prefered this pub to the more formulaic Head Of Steam at the other end of the magnificent porticoed station frontage, and a revisit post refurb is anticipated with excitement.

Large open room in station buildings, basic echoey space & possible an old parcels area. There is a stage in the middle of the rear wall taking up a large space & the pub is in desperate need of extra furniture.

Good beer though

At the other end of Huddersfield's pretty station, the Kings Head also styles itself as an ale house like the Head of Steam; indeed, nine were advertised. My Rod's Blonde from Little Valley was fine but far too cold. Ale prices were very cheap, the most expensive was £2.50. Large rolls were also available to soak up the beer. The interior is divided into two; a large spartan room with a stage and basic furnishings, with a much smaller room to the right which I guess qualifies as a lounge. The pub retains some fantastic original features, such as the intricate mosaic tiled flooring. However there is a general air of decay about the place. The walls are unkempt and tatty, the dark brown varnishing is heavily chipped, the carpet in the lounge is shot and the interior is very dingily lit indeed. Some of the punters on my visit resembled that of stereotypical JDW, especially the toothless old boy yapping away to all and sundry but slowly pouring his pint over the floor at the same time.

This place has bags of potential but currently feels too grim and desperate for me to return which is a shame given that the beer quality at the other end of the station was so poor.

At the opposite end of Huddersfield train station to the Head of Steam is this welcoming little pub. As you enter, the bar is to the right with the rest of the large, open room extending to the left as far as the platform. The room is perhaps a little sparsely decorated, with the impressive patterned tile floor being the most striking feature and only some old Rizzla adverts and pump clips on the walls. Bench seating lines two of the walls whilst tables and low stools are dotted around the main body of the room, which leaves plenty of space for standing at peak times; enough room even for a stage area against the far wall. Next to the bar there is a small, carpeted snug-type room with some stained glass windows which seems a bit out of place given the look of the rest of the pub. Having said that, it appears that there was some work going on whilst I was there and I spotted a couple of doorways boarded up, so perhaps there are other rooms and snugs currently hidden from view.
There was a fine line up of beer on the bar when I visited, all listed on a blackboard at the far end of the bar. I had a choice of Timothy Taylor Landlord and Best Bitter, Bradfield Farmers Blonde, Dark Star Hophead, Salopian Shropshire Gold, Blackwater Baroque, Goose Eye Chinook Blonde, Thornbridge Hopton, Golcar Dark Mild and Northern Deep Dark Secret. I tried the Shropshire Gold and it was in very good condition and went down rather well. The barmaid seemed friendly enough and there was a good crowd at the bar as the place started to fill up as people finished work for the day.
I'm sure there is endless debate about which of the two station bars is the best - most of the people I met seemed to prefer this place but I must say I was more taken by the Head of Steam - but the bottom line is that they are both excellent in their own way and I would suggest that if visiting, time is made to ensure both are done justice.

Manager and staff very friendly, very good choice of ales all marked on a large blackboard with info and prices. Prices were the cheapest around and beer well kept. Very basic inside, manager says there's a spectacular glass doom above the ceiling and when they do a refurb it will be on display. There's a lot of potential with this pub just waiting to see something happen. Will return when they do it up.
