Some clarification required, as The Countryman's been marked as closed both here & on WhatPub, claiming conversion to shop & restaurant. Furthermore, Google Maps has it as not opening on a Saturday, so I wasn't sure what I would find, and was prepared to head for the George & Dragon a mile north instead if the need arose.

Fortunately, the first thing I found was an open door. On entering, and heading through a small lobby, the lounge bar is laid out as in a restaurant, with all the tables laid. To the left is a small shop area facing the bar. I had no problem ordering a pint of Bedlam Benchmark (a fine Sussex Best); both this and the Hepworth Pullman were pulled through a sparkler. I selected my crisps from the shop and was charged £6.10 for both, which seemed reasonable enough for 2022.

We were encouraged to head round to the small public bar, where we took up seats at the counter (presumably the Walkers Sensations didn't justify the full table service). A few other visitors were also interested in just a pint or glass of wine.

In summary, this one's definitely more pubby than quite a few listed on Pubs Galore. It is also as restauranty as any and definitely more shoppy than most. However, it is worth a visit, though the confusion as to opening times and just what's on offer does suggest that a Plan B might be advisable.

Pretty independent country pub and restaurant with first class food and service. Nice to see where the food comes from on the menu, with names of the farms and producers. Excellent range of bar snacks as well as a great restaurant menu. I had slow roast new seasons lamb with bubble & squeak and my wife had local sea bass with all the trimmings.
Definately one to put on the top favourites list.
