Not a very inviting frontage, with lots of signs proclaiming the restaurant aspect, which is actually located upstairs. The ground floor is a tolerable drinking establishment - a slightly cluttered layout of aged feel with various bits of bare brick and a slightly musty smell, being in a flood area. There are 5 cask ales and a few craft keg, mainly from Yorkshire and including a few from Brew York over the road. It doesn't have the pull of the latter but is much quieter and pleasant enough.

Not been in since their last flood, it’s scrubbed up well and naturally has been redecorated. Four plus four pulls; the front four were fully loaded just one on the set behind, a couple from Ainsty plus other smaller Yorkshire breweries. Ok beer quality but nowt special. Seems less food focused than previously.

A decent place this one and I am surprised this is only our first visit here. Eight pumps on the bar with a choice of five ales, Turning Point Wavelength, Ainsty Flummoxed Farmer, Rudgate Viking, Rudgate Battleaxe and Half Moon Masquerade. We went for the Turning Point and the Ainsty Flummoxed Farmer. Prices were slightly elevated at £6.80 for a pint and a half, still the place had a relaxed atmosphere and the staff were great.

Enjoyed our visit to this bar last month. We chose Ainsty Assassin from the cask range and it was fine.

ROB Camra left this review about The Walmgate Ale House

A long narrow pub with a bistro upstairs. Lots of interesting bric-a-brac around the walls. The front area has mainly high posing tables, but there is a range of seating further back in the pub. Only 5 beers available, although there were more handpumps, including a couple from local brewer Ainsty. My pint of Ainsty Flummoxed Farmer was in good nick. The prices are pretty average for York, i.e. not cheap. Ms CAMRA really liked this one and we had to call in again on our second day in York.

Very nice Bar\bistro with good real ales. Eight beers are available but prices are on the steep side, Golden pippin was £3.50. this is a more up market place but is very nice and has a nice back seating area. this was recently hit by the floods but has not suffered as badly as others nearby and has re opened. defiantly worth a visit who wondering down walmgete/fossgate as the beer quality is excellent and is a regular stop off of camera. It h as a similar feel to brigantes on Mickelgate but i personally prefer Brigantes.

A deep narrow building close to Foss Bridge just at the bottom of Fossgate. It has a front drinking area followed by a shallow V shaped counter with an adjacent seating space then a further eating / drinking area labelled the Snug at the rear. Six Yorkshire beers over eight pulls plus two types of Yorkshire lager, Freedom lager and a Yorkshire cider complete the draught range with the usual wines, spirits and coffee. No standard pump clips on the stumps, they have small oval black boards on the pump handle instead. Unusual bar snacks are also available. It says bistro from its previous incarnation as Meltons Too and the atmosphere is still very much cafe bar; upstairs is the actual bistro part of the outfit. Walmgate and Fossgate have a good eclectic range of eccentric pubs and bars and this fits in well with that ethos.

The Walmgate Ale House and Bistro is a decent looking pub.
Once inside there is a long narrow room with the bar to the rear right, there are a few tall tables and chairs to the front, there is a bench seat to the front right, all other seating is normal tables and chairs, there is a separate room to the rear and a bistro upstairs which i did'nt look at.
There were five real ales on the bar,i had a drink of Copper Dragon Golden Pippin which was served by the friendly landlord, the other beers were York Guzzler,York Walmgate and one more from York brewery and Daleside legover.
Decent background music was playing.
I quite took to this pub.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Walmgate Ale House and Bistro

Compact ale house with a bistro upstairs (not visited). Mix of semi-modern furniture, with the decoration largely comprising - slightly worryingly - a collection of noose-like coiled ropes suspended from meat hooks in the ceiling. Base of cantilever pub sign unusually used to advertise the current Scallop Festival. Total of six handpumps, with rather annoying plain chalked clips, offering mostly local beers e.g. York Guzzler, Rudgate Ruby Mild and Treeboom Kettle Drum (£3.50). Also features a anonymous keg font dispensing Yorkshire Lager, Red Lager and Cider.
