Sports bar in nice stone building, pool room, lots of TV screens and very well kept real ale

This bar consists of a large roughly square open plan room with a wooden floor and an area for pool and darts at the rear left. The fairly sparse furnishings were mainly of the taller variety but I managed to find a low seat and table. It wasn't that busy on a Tuesday evening in February.
I only spotted six hand pumps on the bar at the rear right which had Hambledon Nightmare Porter, RAT White Rat, Kelham Island Aviator, North Riding Waimea & Coffee Bean Mild and Roosters Scrambler. I went for the Aviator which I think was £3.60 and was in good nick. Having failed the dice game for a second (free) pint I left. I thought this place was OK but there is no escaping the TV screens which would have completely ruined it for me if they had all been on with sound.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about Scholar's Bar

Very busy town-centre pub, partly opened out to leave part of the counter in each part of the bar. Fairly basic furniture and limited decor. Called in during the Camra AGM so the handpumps were supplemented by additional barrels on stillage, and opted for the Half Moon Vicar's Tipple (£3.20) from a total of 13 beers and a cider available. Decent place for a pint, but I might try a slightly quieter time when I next visit.

One flowing square room with seating in the front two areas a counter at the back right hand side and a pool table in the rear left corner. There are eight pulls including one for cider, the beer quality was fine but had the softness I associate with auto-bacs; I checked and they don't have them. Traditional pubby furnishing and decor in a mix of styles involving Britannia tables, stools, bench seating round the edges and a booth. I found it a bit warm but I'm sure the middle aged punters like that, otherwise a reasonable pub.

Extra handpump on the bar now and as usual all the beers were well kept. We called in both evenings of our two night stay in Scarborough. They play a game called odd or sods on quieter nights of the week. When you buy a round you are given 2 dice to roll, if they come up with an odd number then they give you a receipt that allows you to get the same round again for free. We managed to roll an odd number on both of our visits which meant two pints and two glasses of red wine for about £6.50, great value. Big football games on both nights of our visit and busy, but no problem getting served. It's a good pub is this and one of Scarborough's best.

Great place to come for some good ale and it's just around the corner from some of the best restaurants in Scarborough. Modern bar that's actually part of a hotel but doesn't feel like it. Usually has 4 beers on handpump often featuring Durham and York breweries. Always a good pint and the service is OK as well. Can get noisy on a Friday/Saturday night as it's on the circuit for drinkers in this part of the town.

The Skipton Copper Pippin was that good here my plan to do several pubs in Scarboro went down the pan. It was that good I had a gallon. We arrived along at 1201 to find gates locked but they were swiftly opened by a friendly barman. The service was good but I kept hearing bells!!!! The landlord was up to something.... quasimodo appreciation society I'd say. Loud and irrelevant tellies with football on-a good rock jukebox would have made this place perfect. But still, definitely a must visit in Scarborough.

have to echo the worthy comments posted here. There was footy on when we visited, but did not detract from the beer, service and good atmosphere (the game was Arsenal v Chelsea). Quite a mixed crowd. Had a couple of different beers, Strongarm being one, i think.

Would always visit

A pub which looks rather daunting from the outside but is actually very tardis-like! A decent selection of real ales and live sport on the TVs. A nice spacious, friendly atmosphere.

A modern refit bar, with a heavy slant towards sport and good ale.

Whilst the exterior and interior are nothing to write home about, they are clean and inviting whilst the bar area serves up 4 real ales with a local slant, all in excellent condition on my visit. There was no sport on when I was there but there was still a pretty good atmosphere and I was happy to stay for a couple.

All in all, a tidy place to enjoy a few ales with the football and a good place for a younger drinker like myself. I rather liked it; possibly my favourite GBG pub visited here.
