A good looking pub in whitewashed pebbledash, which is to be found in its eponymous court off Keswick's market place. It's a traditional-looking interior, as far as I could tell with all the Christmas decorations, with a long and handsome bar in dark wood with a brass rail. There are six hand pumps on the bar, but being a Robinsons pub, what I was looking for was a pin of Old Tom perched thereon. But sadly Robinsons seem to have confined their 8% winter warmer to bottles these days. The line up was Trooper, Wizard, Cumbrian Way, Double Hop, Dizzy Blonde and the seasonal Scrooge. I went for the Wizard, which is my favourite among this somewhat bland range, and it was in good condition but not a beer I can summon up a huge amount of enthusiasm for.

Tried 6 pubs in Keswick and this was the best.

Great atmosphere generated by the talented singer/guitarist.

Good Robinsons Unicorn.

Everything you could want from a saturday night pub.

The range of Robinsons beers is augmented in these parts by the beers formerly brewed by Hartleys of Ulverston, so I had an XB and there was also the Cumbrian Way, as well three Robinsons beers on the five hand pumps. The main part of the pub is unremarkable, but to the left there is a staircase leading to a mezzanine room which was set for diners. Plenty of people were eating in the main bar, mostly families finishing their Christmas shopping by the look of them. To my way of thinking there's not a lot to choose between this and the nearby Queens and the ludicrously named Inn at Keswick: they all seem to aim for the meal-after-shopping trade but also keep a reasonable selection of ales for the non-eaters among us. The beer was in good condition and they also offer a tray of three one-third pint glasses for £3.30 for those who want to sample a choice of real ales.

The Packhorse pub has changed owners from Jennings to Robinsons as the latest image shows. The standard of cask beer was poor but the food was good value.
