A nicely-appointed Spoons in a former Methodist chapel (opened 2001). Enter to a high-ceilinged main room featuring a lovely coupola with illustration of said Bruce. To the left up a couple of steps is a small and comfy seating area which provided relief from the draught from the door and was a popular spot. There’s also an upstairs gallery Three guest ales, my Sulwath Galloway Gold was decent (NBSS 3) and breakfast was well-done. Popped back in the evening for a Caledonian Burger which was also nicely delivered. It’s a top quartile Spoons, this one.

Another impressive repurposed building over two floors with the counter at the rear of the ground floor room. Usual ‘spoons layout of two banks of pulls, six aside here, topped and tailed by the standard kegs on T-bars. Due to COVID I ordered via the app and was served in about 4 minutes in a moderately busy pub, on leaving the table was cleared in the time it took for me to visit the upstairs gents and walk back, so good staffing. It’s not large, downstairs is square with a raised area off one end, upstairs is a mezzanine running round two sides. Listed in the 2020 GBG, it is better than at least one of the other six GBG Dumfries pubs in that edition, but two were shut due to COVID.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Robert the Bruce (JD Wetherspoon)

Very imposing 'spoons, rebuilt behind the previously disintegrating façade of the former Methodist Church. Very tall main seating area under a decorated cupola in front of the bar, with more tables in a raised area further back and upstairs on the balcony. Two banks of six handpumps, albeit fully duplicated, offering Doom Bar, Abbot, Broadside, Deuchars IPA, Goff's Jouster and Autumn Daze from Three Castles (£2.15).

At last, a pub with some decent beer on sale. Large main room as you enter with bar at the rear. Many seats before the bar and an upstairs area which was full on my Friday night visit. A reasonable selection of ales, including Marston's Old Empire.

As mentioned below this is a grand old building with a high ceiling and an upstairs gallery. It was busy on my Thursday night visit with largely groups of younger folk. It did strike me that this place was very well run with tables being cleared and the staff coping with the rush when a large group turned up.
Although there are twelve hand pumps everything was doubled up. The six beers were the Scottish version of the JDW Trio Of Doom, Sadler's Peaky Blinder and two festival ales. I went for the Brewster's Hop Quest (£2.25 festival price) which was in excellent condition. This is one of the better Spoons.

A detached and impressive corner JDW pub and eatery, a former Methodist chapel returned to sandstone after being in white render. It is in a mix of styles; with its neo-classic ionian columned entrance, Gothic lancet windows and an Jacobean balastrade, it has the usual Spoon patio area. Named after the Bruce due to the proximity of the site to where Bruce murdered Comyn at Greyfriars.

The interior is on two levels. An open plan lower floor and a gallery above. As per usual Spoons, it is set out for dining, though there is a clear separate family dining area (including upstairs). The walls are generally red and white, with some wood panel and there is a black and white chessboard floor and white ceiling. The coupola on the roof is painted with images of the Bruce and worth a look. The walls have architectual styled drawings as well as other stuff on them. The food here was fine, as was the service - not only was it friendly when you got it, but i echo what ROBCAMRA says - you got it in the first place - there was enough staff to serve the quite busy usual Spoons clientele. The silent TVs were on and there was no music.

Beer; tap stuff as usual, along with Abbots and Ruddles on handpull. Also, there was a decent Weltons Chocolate MILD and a slightly dying, but still nice enough Ayr Brewery's Rabbie's Porter. I noted Marston's Old Empire and Rev James as being on as well, but it wasnt easy to see the pumps!

Definately one of the better Spoons experiences i have had - but most noted for the quantity and quality of the staff on this occasion.

Fairly standard JDW, but with staff! We had no problem getting served even on a Saturday night. Usual Wetherspoons fare with a couple of guests. Usual Wetherspoons clentele with a couple of dipsticks who'd had a couple too many. Not bad though.

Wetherspoons. A converted methodist church - blasphemous perhaps - but I see it as balancing out the governments plans to turn all pubs into librarys, and tax enjoyment until only the most productive specimens can have enjoyment entitlements.
Quite small for a wetherspoons, basicaly one large room, a smaller quiet area upstairs and an outside covered smokers area.
Good selection of real ales. I tried the Robert the Bruce ale (brewed exclusively for this pub) which was very good.
I suppose (if I wasent married) the barmaids would be considered hot.
There was a football match showing, everyone was staring up at the tv, resembling a group of meerkats.
Dumfries looks a great place for a pub crawl. Quite a few real ale pubs. Try googleing "real ale foot fest".
