My first visit since the Jennings brewery was closed by Carlsberg Marston's, but of course they'd already made a mess of the distinctive dark Bitter, and of the silky, dark Sneck Lifter that I used to enjoy here. Now it's Wainwright (choice of Gold or Amber) or 61 Deep (a reference to how far down the directors of the brewery should be buried, I think). My half of Amber was drinkable without particular resentment, so would qualify for NBSS 3 if I was in a good mood, but it's an average beer so it gets NBSS 2. The pub feels diminished, with the formerly attractive snug on the left now given over to coffee tables, and the settles to the right being warmed, as an afterthought, by a fan heater rather than an open fire

The George Hotel is a traditional 300 year old coaching inn occupying a central position close to Keswick’s Moot Hall and its central square. It’s a Grade II listed Georgian style building.
Outside, a plaque tells us that it’s the oldest pub in Keswick. It was originally called The George and Dragon, the name being changed on the accession of King George I. We’re also told that German miners of lead and silver paid their dues here to the servants of Queen Elizabeth I.
An entrance with a tiled floor leads to the bar counter at the back of the main drinking area. This is a bare boarded, wooden beamed, small lobby style area with bar stools and ledges running along the side of the walls. It’s broken up by a number of pillars which are decorated with some old hotel price lists and menus and some black and white photos of Keswick being flooded in 1985.
On the left as you come in is a comfortable, small, carpeted lounge seating area – evidently a different room once, but with the door now removed – with fixed padded seating around the walls, wood panelling and subdued lighting. A large dark beam straddles the ceiling, which has burgundy painted walls. Pleasingly, this is denoted as a dog free zone. On the partitioned wall panelling to this area are some black and white photos of when the then Prince of Wales came to Keswick in June 1927. We also see, on the corridor leading to the rear car park, a large framed photo of one of the founders of the National Trust, Hardwicke Rawnsley.
Further seats are available in a snug style seating area on the right, again traditionally furnished, where there’s a fine fireplace.
There’s no TV’s or fruit machines etc and the overall feel is still that of a characterful old inn, albeit one that looks like it has lost some of its internal partitioning and doors.
A separate dedicated restaurant with waitress service occupies a large room up a few steps on the right.
A substantial menu includes the Famous George Gigantic Pies – a house speciality apparently coming in at £ 17.95 and £ 12.95p for a full and half sized pie respectively. These pies come in a number of varieties – eg – Cow Pie, Farmhouse Pie.
Like many pubs in Keswick, it’s a Jennings pub, offering the full range of their beers – Bitter, Cumberland, Sneck Lifter and Cocker Hoop. Also on was George and Dragon Ale, stated as “ being brewed specially for the pub by Marstons”, but which is probably Pedigree or Burton rebadged. At differing times over by various visits, 2 Ringwood Beers appeared – Boon Doggle and 49’er – rather parochially referred to as “guest beers”.
Accommodation is offered, with an old style serving hatch reception area just across the corridor from the bar counter.
Tourists don’t appear to dominate in here as much as some of the other Keswick pubs and, on my visits, a few seemingly regulars were in attendance propping up the bar.

Jennings Inn in the centre of Keswick. If you enter from the street into the bar area, there is a restaurant to the right and a more cosy room on the left with a 'No Dogs' sign on the door, which is where we sat (Will has referred to it below as the lounge). The walls in this room were mainly painted in a worn leather effect look but one wall was dark wood panelling. There was an open coal effect fire and red patterned carpet on the floor which made it feel like a comfortable place to be, especially as it was a bit chilly outside.
Ales were the Jennings range and one Ringwood Boondoggle. Staff and customers seemed friendly and a special mention goes to the lunchtime baguette which was good value at £4.95. I would happily return.

A large Jennings pub just off Keswick's main drag, the George's main attraction is the really nice old fashioned lounge, which is to the left on entering. There's a wooden partition and the door has glass panels in it. Inside there's a fireplace with arched inglenooks either side, and a really cosy feel with crimson paint on the walls and a similar base colour to the patterned carpet. The walls are adorned with a variety of interesting pictures.
The bar is to the rear on entering, with plenty of space in front, on two levels, with varied tables and seating. Further to the right is a formal dining room. There are six hand pumps, with beers from Jennings and others from the Marstons stable. Definitely worth a visit.

Fantastic 300 year old pub hotel.
A really warm welcome & superb Jennings beers. Try the all, I love the Cumberland, it's well kept as are all the beers here.
The food is superb & great value wether you eat in the bar or in the restaurant, portions are HUGE & great value. try the blackpudding starter or the home made fish cakes. If you really can eat, try & tackle the cow pie, you can have either half or attempt the full thing.....good luck. Accomodation is clean, quiet & comfy.
This pub has a real atmosphere about it, a must visit place if you are in Keswick, it's always lively but still remains friendly & laid back.
Great beers & superb food ....full marks.
