This ought to be a great pub but it's picture postcard (literally) appearance on the canal side means that it is more of a tourist destination, especially in the summer. Pop in for a drink after your evening walk, or enjoy the excellent food, but don't expect a genuinely friendly welcome.

The George is an old pub which has in recent years become a bit of a tourist trap. It is quite large but can feel cramped and is decorated in faux-country style - more twee than classy. Being near the canal and having a large car park make it popular with walkers, families and tourists, which does not, in my opinion, do it any favours. It does average food and usually has two or three ales on. Not sure who owns it, but it has more the ambience of a Beefeater than a freehouse. The beer is never in top condition - the pint of Wells I had this time reinforced that. The staff can be a bit jobsworth, and although friendly enough, I never feel really welcome here. It's fine to drop in for an early pint or a lunch but I wouldn't make an evening of it.

This is a real Tardis like pub, massively bigger on the inside than it appears from the outside. It's always been a great pub with the quintessential country pub feel to it. Lots of different rooms, some flag stones, plenty of wood beams, candles on the tables, etc. A really nice ambience.

It's also right next to the Kennet & Avon canal, although it's a shame you can't really see it from the pub as it's up too high. A great place to stop for a pint though if you're out for a walk. There's a number of outside seating areas outside as well.

Staff were polite rather than friendly, but they got the job done. There's an extensive food offering and lots of people seemed to be eating. A few beers on tap, albeit a slightly uninspiring selection - on this occasion they were Butcombe, Doom Bar, Bombadier, Old Speckled Hen and, according to the Blackboard, Gem, although there was no evidence of this on the bar. The only cider was Strongbow unfortunately.
