A very fine stone building close to Pen Mill station, with a fine portico hotel entrance ,a side door leads to the bar.Internally there has been a modern makeover, which is a bit tacky with pine flooring. There are various raised areas with tables and chairs,a flatscreen showing BBC News 24,gaming machines and gentle muzak.Guests will check in at the bar, while there is a large restaurant to the right of the building.Benches outside for external drinking only offers views of the traffic on the busy Sherborne Road.
Despite a friendly welcome from the young bar staff,it felt a bit corporate with just two ale choices, the ubiquitous Doom Bar ,and a reasonable St Austell Tribute.Food was listed on hanging boards but does not dominate the bar,it's a comfortable place to drink in Yeovil but proved a little dull.

Originally a coaching inn dating from around 1800, then an hotel serving the nearby Pen Hill Station when the railway arrived. It’s still an hotel, trying to be a restaurant, managing to be a reasonable pub with B&B. There is a good sized car park and a large seating area at the front. The ground floor contains a single large bar and dining area, light and airy, modernised and redecorated after a major fire a few years ago. The gaming machines and TV showing BBC news detract from the restaurant feel, while the food is, at best, average pub quality; an exception is the fresh, locally made pork pies which were excellent. It is also noisy inside due to its propinquity to the busy main road. It is dog friendly, the staff are pleasant and the customers normal. There were two ales on, both from Sharps – I had a pint of Atlantic, which was in very good condition and most refreshing. Worth dropping in if passing.

Visited several times during the past year, the latest visit being this week on Valentine's Day. Although the service was admirable, to say we were disappointed with the actual meal is a bit of an understatement - my 10oz steak must have had 7oz of fat and gristle spread evenly throughout its mass and the hand-cut triple-cooked chips had been left to 'rest' far too long such that they were dried out, hard, and mostly left uneaten. The cheese board was not exactly first rate with just three grapes each as a garnish, no butter, no chutney, etc. Worst of all? - both of us felt unwell throughout the night and far into the next day. Slipped back to a 4/10 for me.

I've re-written my appraisal of the Pen Mill and raised my rating from below average to above average based on a couple of recent visits, the lastest visit being last evening. The Pen Mill has improved tremendously over the last couple of years and now has attentive staff and the beers have improved out of all recognition - my Doom Bar (£3.10) was well kept and really good (last week I had equally good Tribute (£3.30). The choice of wines could never be accused of being extensive; but I plumped for a bottle of Shiraz at £14.50 and my wife had a bottle of Freixenet Cava at £18.50, both of which I think were good value.

The menu is nothing to shout about - it's still basically pub grub, albeit well-cooked and with good sized portions - I had a mixed grill which was very good and my wife had Surf and Turf - on the good side she asked for the scampi to be replaced with king prawns, which they were with no quibble. On the bad side, her steak was cold. Fortunately for the Pen Mill she doesn't mind cold food and doesn't like to make a fuss. (Good job my food was hot - that's all I can say!). Another plus is that the food was served on piping hot plates, something that is often overlooked by some restaurants. Overall, the food is good value although the menu remains generally quite uninspired considering the pretentious owner claims it to be Yeovil's favourite independant restaurant! A highlighted part of their menu speaks volumes and quotes the Pen Mill's favourite main course as "ham, egg and chips" - fine dining this isn't and reading that on a menu immediately makes me think that this is not going to be a memorable epicurean repast. The feeling that you are dining in an upgraded transport cafe rather than an haute cuisine restaurant is not helped by plastic flowers on the table and the feeling is reinforced by vinegar still in its Sarson's bottle and those annoying little packets of sauces in a pot. You're not likely to find home-made sauce tartare, or the like, here! Finally, when will so-called restaurants learn that it is almost a sin to have ordinary white pepper on the table rather than pepper grinders?

Recently re-opened following a total refurb after a fire. Very smart bar area with decent menu and separate resturant.
