Reopened 14/06/14 after many years of closure. One of the contenders for the oldest pub in Wales, dating back to the 12th century. It is a very large barn like structure, stone built and wooden framed. The stone tiled ground floor is split into three rooms. The bar area is half open to the rafters and half covered by a low ceiling "mezzanine" level held up on wooden pillars. The middle room is more secluded with similar antique furniture to the bar area. The 3rd room is more informal where darts can be played. The wooden stairs by the bar lead to the upper level which is mainly for dining. This room is in the high beamed rafters.

The Ty Mawr (Big House) is reputed to be the oldest inn in Wales. Sadly this fine old building sits waiting for new life with "To Let" signs outside in this now publess village of Gwyddelwern. I drive past longingly hoping new tennants/owners will come forward and let the ale flow again. As I have never had the chance to visit the place, I will score it 9 for the building alone!
