Blackthorn _ left this review about Cheers

A long and fairly narrow pub in the centre of Weston’s High Street, it is one of a number of similar unremarkable bars nearby that do little to entice anyone in and it seems to me to be a bit of a mystery as to how they survive when so many other pubs are closing.

A pool table is a prominent feature as you walk in to the pub, and not only was the cue kept behind the bar, but you were presented with just one for both players. Perhaps this says something about their usual clientèle. Beyond this is the bar counter which had some imitation beer barrels embedded in the front of it, and this, along with a couple of free-standing barrels to rest your pint on might lead you to surmise that they might actually sell some beer. Décor wise, it does have a little more character than some of it’s competitors with dark salmon paintwork and dark wood panelling on the lower part of the walls. A suspended ceiling was made out of wooden joists and there were some arches off to the left creating some booth style seating arrangements, although the amount of chairs was actually quite limited with just a few stools dotted around. A plasma screen was showing a sports fixture.

At the rear of the pub is something called the Back Bar Live and although it was in darkness on our visit, a quick glance in showed a stage and some speakers, etc., so there must presumably be regular live music nights.

Unfortunately there were no ales on tap, real or otherwise. There may perhaps have been some type of smoothflow concoction, although I did not note this. On the face of it, ciders appeared to fare better with taps for Symonds Founders Reserve, Thatcher’s Gold, Blackthorn and Cheddar Valley. However, the Symonds was apparently off, and both the Thatcher’s and the Blackthorn were in pretty dire condition. All in all, I can see little reason to visit this pub, although having said the nearby competition isn’t up to much either.
