A prominent and striking pub in the centre of this small village, it has something of a gothic appearance to it and is a good size establishment with a few B&B rooms as well as the pub and restaurant. The one think that it lacks is a beer garden, which is a bit of a shame as there are some great views at the back across the fields to Backwell and beyond. A few years back it had a rather troubled history with many periods of closure and an inexorable decline, but since being bought by the local Flatcappers group it seems to have been on a much firmer footing and has had some considerable investment.
Internally it’s essentially all one large, open plan L-shaped room, although there is also a smaller area opposite the bar separated to a degree with some walling, although not completely enclosed by any means. Décor wise it’s broadly similar throughout and has a rather elegant feel with dark, polished boards on much of the floor and some slate tiling elsewhere. Cream wood panelling was on the lower part of the walls and above this was some quite dark, floral wallpaper in the restaurant area and a lighter shade in the bar. Numerous painting adorned the walls, and these seemed to be a random mixture of portraits, country scenes and just abstract artwork. A sofa was just inside the doorway, a table with a selection of newspapers and magazines and there were a number of comfy arm chairs in the bar.
The menu offered a decent looking selection of pub grub dishes with options such as ham egg & chips, burger, fish & chips, etc., although prices were a step or two up from your normal pub prices with the cheapest main course other than a burger coming in at £11.95. We went for a chicken, ham and leek pie, and this was a decent and very tasty dish. That said, it seemed a bit on the small side for £12.50, and only came with buttered greens. We had to pay extra for a side portion of chips.
Beers on tap were their own Flatcappers Ale and Bristol Beer Factory’s Nova, whilst a third pump appeared to have run out. Ciders meanwhile were Stowford Press and Addlestones. Overall I quite liked this pub, but it is perhaps more the sort of place you’d go to relax on a Sunday afternoon rather than engage in a serious session.

A big old pub that over recent years had seen a marked decline into closure. It’s recently been massively overhauled and re-opened so I popped in to have a look.
As Blackthorn describes in the excellent review below, it’s a large place that’s open-plan but retains the feel of several distinct ‘areas’. There’s a green panel and stripped wooden flooring and furniture look – ‘farmhouse chic’, I imagine it being described by an interior designer.
Food is the main source of revenue here but real ale and cider take a decent prominence at the bar, with five ales sourced fairly locally, including their own-branded Faltcappers Ale. I tried three of the five – two were good but the other (Bristol Beer Factory Sunrise) was a little iffy. Ciders included a rather nice Orchard Pig alongside Stowford Press. In addition to the main menu there are bar snacks (pickled eggs, onions and pies). My mate had a pie and rated it as ‘satisfying the need’. Also, gents can check out the toilets where past fillies of Country Life’s "Girls in Pearls" are displayed, framed for your delectation.
All in all, I’m happy with what’s happening here and I’d recommend it.
