A two roomed, very food led pub that is nontheless happy for non eating drinkers to attend. Smart and plush inside but maintaining an olde worlde feel apart from the extended conservatory extention. Just the one Handpump on the small bar, this was dispensing Loddon Hullabaloo which was in fine shape despite the gastro pricing of £5.50 a pint.Pleasant enough for a family meal but not somewhere for a drinking session.

Our pub is a little gem of a place, which we take great pride in and strive to achieve the best we can on every occassion.
Don't just take my word for it, here are the words of several satisfied customers...

I would like to say that it is sometimes difficult to know what to order as the menu contains so many interesting sounding dishes, but if in doubt, the steaks are always very good!

A lovely pub both for a drink or a meal. Welcoming atmosphere, log fire in the colder months, friendly staff, newspapers, attractive conservatory and quiet garden, good beer and amazing freshly cooked food at reasonable prices. Sunday lunchtime roast is an absolute must ( Do reserve a table ). You will not be disappointed !

The Sonning Bell Ringers had an excellent evening at the Shoulder of Mutton for their annual dinner. We had sole use of the conservatory, which gave a
private 'feel' to the dinner, and the food and service were very good. Rob Nedham, Vice Captain, Sonning bell ringers

Only too pleased to say how pleased my sons and I were to hold Mervyns wake at the Shoulder of Mutton, we had a lot of people say how friendly you and the staff were, excellent variety of delicous food and plenty of very welcome hot tea and coffee in warm pleasant surrounding on an extremely cold January day.Would recommend Shoulder of Mutton to anyone.

Not only did we come second place in the 'Pride of Reading 2007, Country Dining' catagory, but we then came 2nd in the National 'Red Tractor- Best British Pub 2008' awards.

The professional critics also love us, just check out their reviews. Don't forget to check out our website either: www.the-shoulder-playhatch.co.uk

Quinno _ left this review about The Shoulder of Mutton

Similar to the Crown down the road in that food is clearly the big push here, but unlike the Crown it also feels like a place where you can drink in peace without feeling to out of place. There were a couple of the usual Greene King suspects in fair shape at the bar (I hear they also now have a Loddon brew on the go). I haven't eaten there but have had it recommended by Mrs Quinno so they must be doing something right. The landlady (Wendy) is very friendly and there's a well-maintained garden area.

Fair enough for what it is, I quite liked it.
